Austin Peay head baseball coach Roland Fanning recently drew headlines when he offered free beer to the first 50 fans in attendance of one of the Governor’s home games. Well, Fanning is back in the headlines on Thursday evening, and this time it’s because tempers flared at the end of the Stetson vs. Austin Peay game in the 2024 ASUN Baseball Tournament.

Check it out below as Fanning had to be restrained from getting up in the face of Stetson head coach, Steve Trimper.

Stetson won the game 5-3, knocking out the top-seed of the 2024 ASUN Tournament, the Austin Peay Governors. Less than a week ago (May 18th), Trimper was quick to troll Austin Peay on Twitter, too.

That was because on May 17th, Austin Peay posted that they were ASUN Regular Season Champions. On May 18th, Austin Peay, FGCU, and Stetson were all announced as three-way split as champions, which prompted Trimper to tweet.

Thursday’s win marked the first win of the 2024 ASUN Baseball Tournament for the Stetson Hatters.

Following the game, Gerald Harrison the Director of Athletics for Austin Peay, issued a statement on Twitter.

“The events following today’s ASUN Baseball Tournament game do not represent the best of Austin Peay athletics. Regardless of the comments or actions of others, as governors we must and should ascend to a higher level of class and sportsmanship. We remain proud of coach Fanning and our baseball team, who have enjoyed an exceptional season and brought the first regular-season baseball championship to Clarksville since 2013. These coaches and student-athletes are proud to be Clarksville’s hometown team. As such, we are committed to using our passion, energy, and grit in a positive manner regardless of opponent or outcome.”

Austin Peay had one of their most impressive seasons in school history and they were fueled by their dominant production at the plate. The Governors featured seven players with 10 or more home runs in the 2024 season. Two of those players blasted 20 or more home runs each.

Lyle Miller-Green shattered Al Bolden’s record for walks in a single-season this afternoon. He got his 54th walk in the first inning, giving him 54 walks for the 2024 campaign. He’s also been one of the most dominant power hitters in all of college baseball.
