Big 12 announce Week 9 awards in college football
The Big 12 announced their weekly awards on Monday afternoon, with Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State getting representation. All three won their matchups in Week 9 convincingly against TCU, Texas Tech, and Kansas respectively.
Beginning with Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams, he continued his dominance against Texas Tech Saturday afternoon. Winning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, he set an Oklahoma true freshman record with 402 passing yards and tied the school record with six touchdown passes.
To add on, he becomes just the third Oklahoma quarterback to ever throw for six touchdowns without any interceptions. Both Heisman-winning quarterbacks Baker Mayfield (2016) and Kyler Murray (2018) accomplished the same feat.
This is the second time Williams has been named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week since being inserted against Texas in the Red River Showdown.
Williams was not the only Sooner to be named to an award this week, with true freshman Mario Williams winning Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. He led the team with five receptions against the Red Raiders to go along with his 100 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Staying within the state of Oklahoma, senior kicker Tanner Brown was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after going eight for eight on his place kicks against Kansas. He hit a career-long 48-yard field goal in the first quarter and made all seven of his extra-point attempts.

Brown led the Cowboys with 10 total points.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kansas State’s Felix Anudike-Uzomah was the final player named, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against TCU. His stat line is an astonishing one, recording eight tackles, 4.0 tackles for a loss, and 4.0 sacks.
There has been some controversy surrounding the total number of sacks credited to Anudike-Uzomah’s name. The defensive end forced TCU quarterback Max Duggan to fumble twice behind the line of scrimmage. At first glance, it was thought he had tied an NCAA single-game record for sacks.
However, the Big 12 has said “the fumbles caused on the pass plays bounced forward,” meaning, Anudike-Uzomah does not get his name in the NCAA record book. One more sack and he would have had the Big 12 record as well.
In addition to his conference award, the Kansas State pass rusher was named the Walter Campbell National Defensive Player of the Week.
