The Big Ten has announced their tie-breaking process ahead of the start of the season later this week.

The conference shared the breakdown on Monday. With this, teams that have a tied record solely in the Big Ten will go through this process to determine who officially finishes above the other.

The Big Ten will break potential ties through six different criteria per the release:

  1. The tied teams will be compared based on head-to-head matchups during the regular season.
  2. The tied teams will be compared based on record against all common conference opponents.
  3. The tied teams will be compared based on record against common opponents with the best conference record and proceeding through the common conference opponents based on their order of finish within the conference standings.
  4. The tied teams will be compared based on the best cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents.
  5. The representative will be chosen based on the highest ranking by SportSource Analytics (team Rating Score metric) following the regular season.
  6. The representative will be chosen by random draw among the tied teams conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

The full explanation, including the scenarios of three or more teams in a tie, is in a separate document.

With the Big Ten eliminating divisions and realigning to a total of 18, tiebreakers could be more important than ever to determine who is in the conference title game.

The Big Ten Championship will take place on December 7th from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It will also be the debut of that game on their new network on CBS. From there, the winner will move on to represent the conference as a top-four seed in the College Football Playoff.

Big Ten Conference releases new ‘Maps’ commercial after official expansion

The Big Ten released the updated version of their iconic commercial earlier this month following their realignment.

As the view glides into the Pacific Northwest, a float plane buzzes by in front of the Seattle Space Needle. Puddles then leaps through the yellow and green logo. When Los Angeles comes into the frame, the Hollywood sign, Santa Monica Pier, and the skyline get some shine as well.

From there, the commercial continues as it has throughout the rest of the league. The song is also the ever-familiar “Silver Lining” by Guard.
