The 2024 Big Ten Wrestling Championships are in the books and there were 10 champions crowned on Sunday evening.

No weight class across the Big Ten had fewer than seven auto-bids, so the finalists were well secured in their placement for the NCAA Tournament. But ultimate conference glory was on the line.

Below are the results from the 2024 Big Ten Wrestling Finals.

125 lbs.

No. 6 Braeden Davis (Penn State) dec. 7-1 over No. 4 Patrick McKee (Minnesota)

This one was all Davis. He utilized control of the mat, an early takedown and then a clinching one to get a title as a freshman. An impressive display.

133 lbs.

No. 2 Dylan Shawver (Rutgers) TF 23-8 over No. 1 Dylan Ragusin (Michigan)

Shawver used his lightning fast offense and early takedowns to take this one over Ragusin, whom he lost to twice this season. Shawver used takedowns and nearfall points in the end for high scoring affair, becoming Rutgers’ first Big Ten champion in five years.

141 lbs.

No. 2 Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) dec. 4-1 over No. 1 Beau Bartlett (Penn State)

These two were deadlocked the entire match but it was Mendez in the end. The Buckeye won on the scramble and got a takedown with under 10 seconds remaining to win the conference crown.

149 lbs.

No. 1 Ridge Lovett (Nebraska) dec. 5-4 over No. 2 Austin Gomez (Michigan)

The fireworks show didn’t disappoint. These two went at it again and despite some late takedown attempts from Gomez, Lovett hung on for the win.

157 lbs.

No. 1 Levi Haines (Penn State) dec. 4-1 SV over No. 7 Will Lewan (Michigan)

It took til overtime, but Haines won his second straight Big Ten title for the Nittany Lions. Lewan gave it all he could and had some looks, but Haines’ takedown in overtime was the difference.

165 lbs.

No. 2 Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State) dec. 13-11 over No. 1 Dean Hamiti (Wisconsin)

Mesenbrink won a wild one for the Nittany Lions. How about another young buck getting it done? Down 11-7, Mesenbrink landed a takedown and three near fall points to take the lead late in the third period.

174 lbs.

No. 4 Edmond Ruth (Illinois) WBMFF over No. 2 Shane Griffith (Michigan)

An unfortunate end to Griffith’s tournament. He suffered an apparent knee injury during his semifinal win and could not continue on Sunday. Ruth accepted the forfeit to become champion.

184 lbs.

No. 1 Isaiah Salazar (Minnesota) dec. 8-1 SV over No. 3 Bernie Truax (Penn State)

The two could not be separated through seven minutes of action. Then, it was Salazar winning the battle with a takedown in overtime and he took Truax to his back, nearly pinning him in the process.

197 lbs.

No. 1 Aaron Brooks (Penn State) tech fall 19-3 over No. 3 Zach Glazier (Iowa)

Brooks was way too impressive in this match. Multiple takedowns before the third period and then Brooks turned it up in the third. Glazier did all he could on his feet but there was no stopping the pound-for-pound best.

285 lbs.

No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet (Penn State) dec. 9-3 over No. 2 Nick Feldman (Ohio State)

Feldman made it interesting early on with the first takedown of the match. However, once Kerkvliet got out, the Nittany Lion took over from there. The top ranked heavyweight is the heavy favorite for the national title.
