Maryland is expected to start Billy Edwards at quarterback Saturday, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Backup MJ Morris could also play in the opener.

The Terrapins open the season against UConn at 12:00 p.m. ET, hosting the Huskies. Edwards backed up veteran starter Taulia Tagovailoa last year.

In two seasons, Edwards is 38-of-76 passing (50%) for 441 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He also has 63 carries for 227 yards and eight touchdowns, including seven last year.

As a member of the Class of 2021, Edwards was a three-star recruit out of Burke (Va.) Lake Braddock when he committed to Vanderbilt, but did not suit up, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 42 overall prospect in the state, the No. 99 quarterback in the class and the No. 1,497 overall prospect in the class.

Billy Edwards to start at QB for Maryland to begin 2024

It’s a new era for Maryland football and On3’s Andy Staples is very high on the Terps, if all breaks right. Of course, that starts with Edwards at QB.

“I’ve got 9-3,” Staples told Bellaire. “We don’t know who’s gonna start, whether it’s Billy Edwards Jr. or MJ Morris. I like MJ Morris a lot. I think there’s a good chance he winds up being the guy because he probably is the more dynamic of the two. But Billy Edwards won them a bowl game. I mean, they dominated Auburn in the bowl game last year.

“They’ve got most of defensive start, or about half their defensive starters back. They were actually pretty salty on defense last year, they were 14th in yards per play allowed in the whole country.”

Staples believes that Maryland will ultimately “be fine,” and with a win in the postseason — the Terps have a shot to win 10 games for the first time since 2003.
