Billy Napier explains Florida's evaluation of Cam Ward, how he could fit into Miami's gameplan
Given the stake and state of the rivalry, there may not be a bigger Week 1 matchup than Florida–Miami. Both programs feel like they need to win the opener while the losing fanbase will be sent into meltdown mode. Florida’s Billy Napier arguably needs the victory more than Mario Cristobal, especially playing at home.
One of the biggest in-game matchups to watch is Cam Ward going against the Florida defense. People in Gainesville have been honest about the poor defensive play in 2023, desperately needing to improve. Ward presents a good challenge after being voted the preseason ACC Player of the Year.
Napier gave his evaluation of Ward ahead of the game, talking about the quarterback being a productive player on all his stops. If there is one thing Florida will be ready for, it’s Ward making plays when things in front of him break down.
“I think you’re always evaluating the personnel and the matchup,” Napier said during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “I think he has been productive at multiple stops, this is his third stop. He’s played for a lot of different coaches and coordinators. I think the thing about him is that he has experience, he has arm talent, he’s accurate, and his ability to extend the plays, escape the pocket, and make off-schedule plays. I think that’s the element that’s very important.

But at the same time, Florida will be looking to work together as a unit in every game, Miami will be no different. Napier wants his pass rush and secondary to complement each other. Ward and the Hurricanes offense being the first game of the season does not change that.

“Look, we got to get the rush and the coverage to work together,” Napier said. “Each week, part of our plan is to affect the quarterback. So, this is definitely a huge element on this game. We spent a ton of time watching film from his previous stops.”
Ward was previously at Incarnate Word and Washington State, improving a ton during his two seasons in Pullman. Moving to the ACC and Miami could be a massive jump but the Hurricanes are confident Ward can bring them promising results.
For the time being, none would be better than taking down Florida. However, Napier and his staff are prepared for whatever is thrown their way.
