Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix prays over his teammates after defeating Oregon State Beavers during the annual rivalry game on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

The latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings has Oregon creeping closer to the vital top four slots, checking in during the penultimate rankings at No. 5.

The Ducks are now two spots above the Texas Longhorns, a team in a similar circumstance having one loss but playing for a conference championship this weekend.

ESPN’s Rece Davis asked CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan about the distance between the two teams and why Oregon is ranked ahead of Texas by two spots right now.

“Oregon has continued to dominate. Obviously the loss to Washington early in the year at 36-33, coming out of last week and the way they played an Oregon State team that we really respect as a group, held them to seven points as opposed to 34, which they have averaged on the year,” Corrigan said. “The season Bo Nix is having, 78% completion percentage. They just continue to impress the committee with the offense and the defense.”

Texas hasn’t quite left that same impression on the committee clearly, despite having a quality quarterback of its own in Quinn Ewers. But, like Oregon, Texas will have a chance to make a favorable impression this weekend.

The Longhorns will take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys in this year’s Big 12 title game. Oregon will face Washington.

In the event both win, the CFP selection committee might just have to decide on which team to include in the playoff field. There isn’t a ton of crossover between the teams, but there is one common opponent.

Both teams played Texas Tech this year.

While Oregon won 38-30 in the second week of the season, Texas won 57-7 in the regular season finale. Davis asked Corrigan how much they consider that.

“We look at everything, as we’ve talked about each week that we’ve been here,” Corrigan said. “We’re not relying on one single data point, one single game. We’re looking at, we’re through 13 weeks right now and making sure that as we do go through it we are comparing everything that’s gone on over the course of the year.”

So Texas has ground to make up still.
