After the College Football Playoff Selection Committee revealed its latest Top 25, including the list of top contenders for the four spots in the CFP field, chairman Boo Corrigan joined ESPN host Rece Davis to break down why some of the decisions were made and what they mean as the postseason approaches.

When asked about No. 4 TCU, who remained stationary despite picking up a Top 25 win over Texas on the road by showcasing a new element of their game – defense – Boo Corrigan told Rece Davis that this year’s panel has taken week-over-week improvement under serious consideration.

“You’re looking for improvement during the course of the year,” said Corrigan. “And for their defense to give up three points, obviously the other touchdown was a scoop-and-score by Texas, but as you look at the whole package, again, they continue to improve. They’ve earned the opportunity to be in the top four and we have them No. 4.”

For TCU, the words of the selection committee are a welcomed validation of their undefeated record which was called into question by the same group just two weeks ago. While some big losses by top teams opened the door initially, the Horned Frogs now control their own destiny with a spot inside the field and three more games against Big 12 foes – Baylor and Iowa State to wrap up the regular season and whichever team joins them in the conference championship game.

How Corrigan’s words impact other CFP contenders

While the question from Rece Davis referenced TCU and their win over Texas, the response by Boo Corrigan is perhaps most impactful to other College Football Playoff contenders. “Improvement over the course of the season” could not describe any team better than LSU, who cracked the top six this week after rattling off another big win over Arkansas.

While they currently have two losses – one to Florida State and the other to No. 5 Tennessee, who blocks their path to the top four – the Tigers have come on strong with wins over Ole Miss and Alabama over recent weeks. LSU also holds a spot in the SEC championship game, which will give them another shot to show off how much they have improved against No. 1 Georgia.

The words of Corrigan also give a glimmer of hope to teams like USC and Clemson who find themselves outside the current bubble but now have a few more weeks to prove how much they have improved since losing.
