Booger McFarland vehemently disagrees with Ohio State over Georgia in College Football Playoff rankings

When the first College Football Playoff rankings came out Tuesday, Ohio State came in at No. 2, one spot ahead of No. 3 Georgia. That decision didn’t sit well with ESPN analyst Booger McFarland, who said he “totally disagreed” with the committee.

McFarland pointed out the differences between the two teams’ resumes. They’re both 7-1 with road losses. Ohio State fell to Oregon at Autzen Stadium and Georgia lost to Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium earlier in the year.

On the other hand, Ohio State’s best win came last week against Penn State on the road. Georgia also has a marquee victory over Texas in Austin – and that, McFarland argued, was the best win of the year.

“I came into the night wanting to know how this committee would handle the one-loss teams, and I thought Georgia and Ohio State. They’ve got Ohio State ranked No. 2 and Georgia No. 3, and I totally disagree with that because here’s what the committee is saying. They’re giving Ohio State credit for losing at Oregon, and they’re kind of penalizing Georgia for losing at Alabama. I don’t like that,” McFarland said on SportsCenter Wednesday evening. “I think Georgia has the best victory on the season by going to Texas and beating that team the way they did, in that house, during that night. To me, that’s the best victory of the season. And I think the committee needs to look at who you beat, not necessarily how you lost.

“I’m a big proponent of beating people, not losing – ‘Well, you lost close,’ ‘It looked good.’ I don’t care about that. Who did you beat, when did you beat them and how did you beat them? So I thought the committee should’ve had Georgia ranked ahead of Ohio State because I thought that Georgia’s victory over Texas was better than the Ohio State victory over Penn State.”

Although Ohio State ranked ahead of Georgia, the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket would look different. As the projected SEC champion, the Bulldogs would be the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Oregon and receive a first-round bye. The Buckeyes, as a result, would drop to the No. 5 seed and host a first-round game.

The 12-team CFP will see the five highest-ranked conference champions in the field, with the four highest-ranked receiving byes. From there, the next seven highest-ranked teams would round things out.
