Boston College defeated Florida State 28-13 on the road on Monday, dropping the Seminoles to 0-2 for the first time since 2021.

A scoreless first quarter turned into a stunning second as Florida State had no answers for Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos on the ground. He rushed for two scores before halftime as the Boston College defense held FSU to two field goals in the first half.

After the halftime buzzer, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell kept his team on the field before heading into the locker room. Norvell said it was as poor of a start from FSU as it could have been before stating he needed more from his offense in the second half

Florida State appeared to take those words to heart. After getting stopped on their first possession, they showed signs of life trailing 21-6 in the third quarter. FSU quarterback DJ Uiagalelei completed a 29-yard strike to a dancing Kentron Poitier to cut the lead back to one score.

However, Boston College had the immediate answer. The Eagles marched down the field on the ensuing possession and capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a two-yard Kye Robichaux touchdown rush.

Neither team was able to move the ball much after BC’s final touchdown. Aside from Florida State turning it over on downs to start the final quarter, the next four series resulted in punts before Boston College finished things off.

Castellanos finished with 106 passing yards and two touchdowns, but it was the effort on the ground that was too much for the Florida State defense. Three Eagles rushed for over 70 yards, including Castellanos, as BC rushed for nearly 300 yards against Florida State.

Bill O’Brien’s debut as Boston College head coach ultimately ends on a high note, upsetting a top-10 ranked Florida State team in Tallahassee and kicking off the season — and ACC competition — by defeating the reigning conference champion.

Before Monday, Boston College was 12-65 all-time against AP Top 10 teams.

Looking ahead, Boston College will have all the momentum in the world as they host Duquesne in their home opener this weekend. For Florida State, the Seminoles take on Memphis at home as they continue their search for their first win of the 2024 season.
