Breaking Down Best, Worst From Buckeyes Through First Two Games Ohio State Football

There are a lot of good freshman football players across the country, but few are living up to the hype as well as Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith.

A former five-star-plus prospect, he’s come out of the gates running for the Buckeyes.

“We called the spring game for Ohio State,” said FOX Sports analyst Brady Quinn. “This was the No. 1 recruit in the 2024 recruiting class. And I’ll tell you this much, he might be the best that Ohio State has ever seen. He’s already leading the Buckeyes in receiving. He’s got three touchdowns on the season.”

Jeremiah Smith has made excellent contributions in the first two games of his career. He’s got 11 catches for 211 yards and three touchdowns, and his touches have been evenly distributed across the two starts he has made.

But the ability… the ability stands out as much as anything. It led to a lofty comparison from Quinn.

“You can see the size, you can see the speed. And he does it all,” Quinn said. “Short, intermediate, downfield. He can do everything. This guy reminds me a lot when I saw him play in high school — people will say this is kind of nuts — I saw LeBron play with the same class with St. Mary’s basketball. That’s what Jeremiah Smith looked like with high school football in Miami. I’m telling you, this young man is one heck of a prospect. The NFL is already drooling over him.”

How much?

Well, fellow FOX Sports analyst Matt Leinart chimed in with something he gleaned during the offseason.

Chip Kelly is the new offensive coordinator,” Leinart explained. “I talked to him this summer back home. He told me Jeremiah Smith, right now, is a top-five pick. Right now if he left as a freshman. That’s wild.”

Jeremiah Smith and the Buckeyes will be back in action on Sept. 21 against Marshall.
