Breaking down College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s Top 6 teams after Week 12
The College Football Playoff Selection Committee provided its latest rankings after Week 12 games wrapped up, slotting the top six contenders for the four-team CFP field along with the top contenders to land New Year’s Day bids with growing debate up top.
As the season nears the finish and CFP discussions heat up, the top six teams in the picture remain Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Washington.
With a rivalry game between Michigan and Ohio State headlining the Week 13 schedule, debate will certainly grow over the order of one-loss teams as they jockey for position in the CFP conversation. A devastating injury to Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis also sparks debate over resume vs. current roster.
Take a look at what we have seen from each CFP contender, and what is up next.
Georgia (11-0)
Georgia remains atop the CFP rankings with a sold resume which has grown better each week over the past month. Improved health across the roster gives Georgia all the cards needed to hold onto the top seed by winning out.
Remaining schedule: at Georgia Tech, Alabama (SEC Championship)
Ohio State (11-0)
Ohio State has a lot riding on this week’s matchup against Michigan, including a full year of bragging rights and a solid resume which puts them firmly in the College Football Playoff picture, hinging on a Big Ten Championship game against Iowa.

Michigan (11-0)
Like Ohio State, Michigan will rely on this week’s game to build their resume into a CFP lock. Despite noise off the field and a coach away from the team for a second time, the Wolverines have home-field advantage and will be favorites to face Iowa in the Big Ten Championship.
Remaining schedule: Ohio State
Washington (11-0)
Washington remains undefeated after a brutal stretch of Pac-12 opponents looking to knock them off, and has now clinched a spot in the Pac-12 Championship. While the past rankings viewed Washington behind Florida State in the undefeated rankings, Travis’ injury has sparked conversation about the order.
Remaining schedule: Washington State, TBD (Pac-12 Championship)
Florida State (11-0)
Florida State spent the majority of the year building its resume for a College Football Playoff spot, and made it to Thanksgiving week undefeated and inside the top four. However, Travis’ season-ending injury is a brutal blow which could have a major impact on the outlook.
Remaining schedule: at Florida, Louisville (ACC Championship)
Oregon (10-1)
Oregon is one win away from a rematch against Washington in the Pac-12 Championship game, making the rivalry game against Oregon State even more important. As the top one-loss team, a chance at revenge could prove pivotal for the Ducks’ CFP hopes.
Remaining schedule: Oregon State
