Brent Pry provides update on Will Johnson injury
Virginia Tech senior linebacker Will Johnson will be out for an extended period after an injury he suffered in the opener against Vanderbilt, head coach Brent Pry said on Tuesday.
And Johnson, who Pry said is a “tough guy,” evidently had to hurt himself pretty seriously to not try and get to the sideline himself. When Pry saw the linebacker on the field and in distress, he knew it wasn’t going to be a short-term injury.
“Will’s going to be out for a little while,” Pry said. “Tough guy, started on four special teams, ultimate team guy. Pretty tough injury, tough guy. I knew when I saw him kind of in agony out there, it wasn’t something minor. Because otherwise he would’ve bounced up, limped off if he had to. So he’s going to be out of commission for a little bit, we hope to get him back at some point down the stretch.”
Virginia Tech lost its season opener in overtime to Vanderbilt.

The Hokies are also dealing with a quarterback injury
Hokies starting quarterback Kyron Drones wasn’t able to finish the game, and backup Collin Schlee was on the field to lead the overtime effort.
Following the game, Pry shared an update on the injury that Drones was dealing with, explaining what led to the decision to keep him from returning to the game.
“He was [lobbying to get in]. He wanted to go and he’s our guy,” Pry said. “But we’ve got to be able to pull it down and run it, and just watching him, it didn’t look good. The play went back out there and he came up kind of limping. That was kind of — it was time to go with Collin.”

Drones was shaken up with an apparent injury late in the fourth quarter of the game. At that point, Vanderbilt had a chance to go and win the game but missed a last second field goal. With that, the game went into overtime and when during Virginia Tech’s turn on offense, it was Schlee at quarterback.
Virginia Tech got the second possession in the overtime period. But, Kyron Drones wasn’t able to return to the game in Pry’s assessment.
Despite that, Brent Pry didn’t share any details about the exact nature of Kyron Drones’ injury or how long he expects it to impact him following Saturday.
The Hokies weren’t able to score and the Commodores won the game with Drones on the sidelines.
Kyron Drones finished the game with 322 passing yards and two touchdowns with an interception. He also ran for 19 yards on 16 carries, with sacks counting against that number. Collin Schlee ended up only throwing the ball once, failing to complete the pass. He did run for nine yards in his limited playing time.
