The Oklahoma Sooners dropped their depth chart on Sunday evening, just a few days ahead of their season opener matchup against the Temple Owls. Shortly after the depth chart was released, Sooners’ head coach Brent Venables went on his coaches show and offered up some clarity on a couple of positions, including wide receiver Nic Anderson.

He said that Anderson has been limited in practice and is listed as ‘day-to-day’ this week. He ‘has a chance’ to play against Temple on Friday, according to George Stoia III of Sooner Scoop.

Nic Anderson should be an important piece for the OU offense

Anderson figures to be a key piece to the Sooners’ aerial attack in 2024. Last season, he hauled in 38 catches for 798 yards and 10 touchdowns. Plenty of people have him keyed up for big year this fall. He’ll be joined in the Oklahoma receiving corps by Deion Burks. He had a breakout year last fall for the Purdue Boilermakers, when he hauled in 47 catches for 629 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Coming out of Katy High School (Katy, Texas), Anderson was tabbed as a four-star prospect in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.

Burks was dominant in the spring, flashing impressive chemistry with signal-caller Jackson Arnold. The 5-9, 190-pound wideout is a lid lifter for the Oklahoma passing attack. He recently earned the honor of landing on Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks List” for the 2024 season. Burks has squatted 540 pounds and bench pressed 400 pounds, and after taking a quick look at those numbers and his film, it’s easy to see why he landed on the list. Venables and the Oklahoma staff have to be amped up about his jaw-dropping potential for the 2024 campaign and beyond.

One of the more exciting notes on the depth chart is that sophomore Peyton Bowen is listed at punt returner. A former five-star prospect in the 2023 cycle, this move has to have Sooner fans downright giddy. Bowen can be an electrifying playmaker. He was once described by his high school coach at Denton Guyer as a “generational player”. Bowen made an instant impact last year as a true freshman, tallying 36 total tackles with five pass deflections. And now he’ll get a chance to make a difference on punt return.

Oklahoma will take on Temple on Friday, August 30.
