Bret Bielema turns Lane Kiffin's argument against him, makes College Football Playoff case for Illinois
Selection Sunday is still a week away but that just means more time for politicking for college football coaches. Lane Kiffin started things off with an opening salvo Sunday, then Bret Bielema followed up with a shot across his bow.
Kiffin tweeted a screenshot of what appeared to be a post on an Internet message board, a post lending credence to the idea that Ole Miss is more deserving of a College Football Playoff berth than Alabama or South Carolina.
The post quickly went viral.
It also came on the heels of Lane Kiffin taking a shot at South Carolina’s playoff credentials, with the head man doing anything and everything he could to rustle up support for the Rebs.
Among other things, Kiffin’s post pointed to how much Ole Miss has outscored its opponents by, how little it was outscored by opponents it lost to by, and results against common opponents. So Bielema took a similar tack in attacking Kiffin’s squad to present his team’s College Football Playoff case.
“I couldn’t agree more [Lane Kiffin] here is a thought for the [College Football Playoff],” Bielema wrote on Twitter. “Ole miss #31 strength of schedule and has 3 losses to unranked Kentucky, Florida and 8-4 LSU team (shrug emoji)

“#Illinois HAS #30 strength of schedule and has 3 losses to #1 Oregon and #4 Penn State and a one possession game to Minnesota … How about we just take the best 12 teams and see where it goes…”
Of coures, the definition of 12 best teams will vary widely, as there are significantly more than 12 teams now pleading their case with the regular season over and the committee starting to stew over the results.
In the meantime, college football fans are being entreated to a fantastic show as coach after coach chimes in on their playoff worthiness.
We’ll find out the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The final edition of the rankings will come on Dec. 8, beginning at noon.
