Brett Yormark declares the Big 12 will be the deepest conference
The new-look Big 12 is going to be one of the most wide-open conferences in this upcoming year in college football. Commissioner Brett Yormark thinks it will be too based on how he views his league going into kickoff.
Yormark spoke about the depth of the Big 12 during his opening statement at Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday. He claimed that they will be the deepest conference in the country, which, over the course of the season, will lead to there being an impact on every single outcome every time that their teams take the field.
“As you can tell, 2024-25 will be a very exciting year for the Big 12,” said Yormark. “On the football front, we will be the deepest conference in America. Every week will matter. I’m going to say that one more time. We will be the deepest conference in America. Every week will matter.
“We have star power and parity. We boast some of the top players and coaches in the game,” Yormark added. “November will be incredibly exciting and we will brand it as a race to the championship.”
Yormark further made that point during his following press conference from Las Vegas.
“I think there’s a lot of parity. We’ve got 16 great coaches. We’ve got a lot of star power – you think about the quarterbacks, you think about the running back. Many of our programs have been building over the last couple of years. So I think it’s only natural and appropriate for us to think that way right now,” said Yormark. “We were a very deep conference last year. We got deeper now with the four corner schools. So I’m expecting great things from our schools this year.
“I think, last year, we underperformed a little bit, candidly. I don’t expect that to be the case this year.”

Again, the Big 12 more than makes the case as the conference with the most parity within it. Their 16 teams will enter the Fall with several vying for a chance at the conference title and a few having a shot at playoff berths from there.
Win totals from the Big 12 average out to 6.8 per team with 10 teams projected between 5.5 and 7.5 victories. Three in Utah (9.5), Kansas State (9.5), and Kansas (8.5) have more than that while just three more in Arizona State, BYU, and Houston having less at 4.5 apiece. Those predictions look like a potential jam from the top to the middle of the pack with many teams looking to be in contention.
It could be anyone’s league in 2024 out in the Big 12. That’s why Yormark is ready to see his program take the field and play it out to see who makes it to Arlington.
“Every week will matter,” Yormark said. “As I said earlier, November? We will brand a month as a race to a championship because I think it’s going to be really tight this year and it will take until towards the end of the season for us to determine who will show up at AT&T Stadium for that championship game.”
