LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly praised quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. In particular, he called on his quarterback to accept more praise.

Kelly was making his weekly appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show when the topic of quarterback play came up. As he explained, Nussmeier has been excellent for the team as he’s taken over that leadership role, though he is almost too humble.

“Coach’s son,” Brian Kelly said. “Very humble. I think he’s been brought up in this environment. But I would be remiss to say a lot of times he’s deflected a lot of the praise and sometimes it’s important that you can’t always deflect the praise. You’ve got to take some of it as well and he deserves it.”

Garrett Nussmeier is coming off a week where he was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. That was on the back of his massive performance in the win over UCLA, which saw him throw for 352 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s currently doing some things that have not been done here and we’ve had some pretty good quarterbacks. Matter of fact, two of them are playing tonight against each other,” Kelly said. “Two Heisman Trophy winners [Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow]. So, he’s a guy that at this position is playing at such a high level and deservedly so he was the Offensive Player of the Week as well. So, good for Garrett and he continues to drive our football team on the offensive side of the ball.”

Garrett Nussmeier will look to continue his success next week when LSU continues non-conference play with a game against South Alabama. After that, it’s back into SEC play where the Tigers will need him to thrive at the quarterback position.

Tim Tebow: Garrett Nussmeier needs help from LSU offensive line

Former SEC quarterback great Tim Tebow believes in Garrett Nussmeier. However, he was critical of the offensive line, insisting that he needs help when he drops back to pass.

“Garrett Nussmeier is for real. This kid can make every throw, but I got to be honest, he needs a lot of help. He needs more help from his offensive line, he needs more help from his running game. And for sure, he needs more help from his defense. You can’t just put him in second and third and long and think that he can come up with it time and time again. He’s going to need more help,” Tebow said.

“Last week, he got hit over and over and over again, and you’re going to have to protect him better. I would also look to go empty so he can get it out quick, or have seven-man protection, because that also worked really well last week for them against South Carolina. So even though you got great quarterback play and receivers, you need help from your physical big boys up front.”
