Biggest Takeaways for LSU vs South Carolina

LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly went to the SEC for an explanation on a controversial leaping no-call in the South Carolina game. On the weekly SEC teleconference, Kelly explained what was told to him about it.

The play itself came on a blocked punt when the South Carolina rush appeared to jump over the body of blockers to get to the kick. The Gamecocks then recovered the ball and set their offense up with a short field.

“We did get a response and the response was that the leaping took place outside the framework of the body of, in this instance, [Bo] Bordelon, who was the shield,” Brian Kelly said. “If it takes place outside of the framework, and the framework is characterized as shoulder pad to shoulder pad, if it takes place outside of that framework, then leaping is allowed.”

It’s an explanation that makes sense. However, that doesn’t mean that Brian Kelly necessarily agrees with whether or not that’s what happened on the field in the moment.

“We agree to disagree that that took place outside the framework of the body. So, we accept the verdict and we move on,” Kelly concluded.

In a game that came down to the wire, it’s easy to go back and look at the close calls and be critical of those controversial ones, like the no-call for leaping.

The LSU-South Carolina game was one that had several controversial calls in it. That included several defensive delay of game calls, which Brian Kelly noted were justified. There were also two calls that took defensive touchdowns off the board for South Carolina. However, Kelly felt those controversial calls were good decisions.

“They looked like fouls to me,” Kelly previously said of the controversial penalties.

Next week, the LSU Tigers will continue their 2024 season with a non-conference game against the UCLA Bruins.

David Pollack blasts SEC officiating late in LSU vs. South Carolina game

After the game, the SEC faced criticism for how officials handled the end of the LSU vs. South Carolina game, including criticism from David Pollack.

“What the heck is going on with the roughing the passers?” Pollack said. “They make an unbelievable play, [Kyle] Kennard gets to him and hits him, basically forces an INT, forces him to throw the football. Then he touches him. Like he gives him a little touch and it’s a 15-yard penalty. I’m not sure what you want him to do.”
