LSU head coach Brian Kelly recently trolled Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin over comments he made about Coca-Cola.

Kelly opened a recent press conference by thanking Coca-Cola as a sponsor, before raving about the company’s different products. In particular, he praised them for Smartwater, which he is apparently a big fan of drinking.

“Just a shout-out to our sponsor, Coke,” Brian Kelly said while opening a bottle. “Smartwater, great Coke product. Minerals, vitamins.”

“It’s just great for you. It’s refreshing,” Kelly said. “Healthy and Coke provides you all the products that you need, depending on what you like, and I love Smartwater.”

Brian Kelly concluded by taking a sip of his water before pointing out that at least one of the reporters who were there caught on to his joke.

This came just a couple days after Lane Kiffin was critical of Coca-Cola, in particular for how unhealthy it is to drink and the sugar content in a serving. He did that with a bottle of Coca-Cola and Dasani water sitting on the podium he was standing at, which is actually what got his attention in the first place.

“Does anybody drink Coke? You realize that 130 percent of your sugar for the entire day is in this one bottle? 65 grams of sugar,” Kiffin said. He then admitted he can’t remember the last time he’s had a Coke. After that, Kiffin made a joke about one of the reporters in the room drinking Coke before deciding to walk away and end his press conference.

Perhaps the two head coaches will have a little extra on their minds this season. It’s going to be about more than winning an important SEC football game. It’s going to be about whether or not Coca-Cola products are worth drinking. It’s just a shame that fans will have to wait until mid-October for these two coaches to meet.

Of course, that won’t be their first meeting. The two have coached against each other not just as SEC foes but when they were at Notre Dame and USC respectively. Between their multiple stops, the two coaches have faced each other five times. Brian Kelly has the slight edge, with a 3-2 record over Lane Kiffin.

As of now, ESPN’s FPI is giving LSU a 62.1 percent chance to beat Ole Miss in that game. That will be a home game for the Tigers and could be key in deciding the outcome of the regular season race to the top of the SEC.
