Despite playing Arizona last week, Saturday was the opening Big 12 game of the season for Kansas State. A tough test out West was on tap against BYU, heading into a hostile environment hoping to see an upset win. The Cougars got it as well, taking down the No. 13 team in the country seemingly in the blink of an eye, 38-9.

At one point, Kanas State was up three and was about to head into the locker room with the lead. However, in the span of under 10 minutes of game time, the score was completely flipped on its head and BYU had scored 31 unanswered points.

A completely wild scene from Provo with multiple different ways BYU scored. None more impressive than a punt return touchdown from Parker Kingston, needing some medical attention once getting back from the end zone. Well more than 100 yards were run by Kingston on the play after initially muffing the punt.

Kanas State attempted to get back in the game by running quarterback Avery Johnson. Ultimately, the Wildcats fell short and the party was on from LaVell Edwards Stadium to start their Big 12 season with a major victory.

Not too much offense was required from BYU, especially in the second half. Most of the time was spent attempting to drain the clock and see out the victory. Just one offensive touchdown was scored coming out of the locker room but it was more than enough to get the job done.

This marks the program’s first ranked win since getting one over Baylor back in 2022. A huge moment for the program in their second year as members of the Big 12.

Heading into the season, Kanas State was viewed as one of the favorites to win the Big 12 and represent the conference in the College Football Playoff. While the season is far from over, losing to BYU makes the road a whole lot tougher. Next week’s matchup is Oklahoma State, who is also coming off a loss against Utah. A few other tests remain on the schedule as well.

As for BYU, they were predicted to finish 13th by the media in the preseason Big 12 poll. Head coach Kalani Sitake is going to feel a whole lot better about his team after getting this kind of win. Teams are not going to enjoy traveling to Provo to play, especially those with big aspirations.
