Caleb Wooden confronts Steven Hubbard, Diego Pavia over Hugh Freeze taunt during postgame
Diego Pavia is quite comfortable going up against Auburn and more specifically, Hugh Freeze. In three consecutive seasons, Pavia has won head-to-head matchups against Freeze. Saturday was the first time wearing a Vanderbilt uniform, going into Jordan-Hare Stadium to earn the Commodores bowl eligibility.
A few Vanderbilt players celebrated on the field following the game and specifically made it known Pavia is 3-0 against Freeze. Offensive lineman Steven Hubbard was one of them. Showing off their swagger has been a theme for Vandy this season as the program puts together one of its best seasons in a long time.
“He up 3-0 right now,” Hubbard said. “He up 3-0. This same field, last season. He beat that ass. He came in here and beat that ass.”
Auburn defensive back Caleb Wooden was not thrilled with Hubbard’s actions and confronted him. Vanderbilt wide receiver Richie Hoskins was there too as some back-and-forth jawing took place. Thankfully, the moment did not escalate as the two teams were eventually separated.

Ahead of the game, Freeze joked that he was “sick” of seeing Pavia after the two previous losses. If he was kidding earlier in the week, he might now be serious after another great performance from the quarterback. Auburn is 3-6 on the season with only one SEC win on the resume.
Freeze will luckily never have to face Pavia again as the quarterback is set to run out of eligibility following the 2024 season. There is no avenue for him to return to Nashville for another season, where Auburn will play next year. Somebody else will be playing quarterback when they face off.
So the 3-0 record will live on forever. Pavia will never forget the wins, especially the last two. From his time at New Mexico State to Vanderbilt, getting wins against Freeze — the former Liberty head coach — and now Auburn has become routine for one of the country’s favorite quarterbacks.
