Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei safety CJ Lavender trimmed his list to six schools earlier this year, but even then, he knew the one. The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder was high on schools like Miami, Oklahoma and Stanford, but none could compete with the way he felt about Washington.

“I had 31 offers, but after seeing me practice in January, Washington really got involved and I knew in February that Washington was for me,” Lavender told On3. “They were consistent, they build a relationship and it just kept getting stronger.

“I made my decision after an amazing time at Washington’s first Junior Day. It was the best Junior Day I’ve been a part of, me and my family felt the love the entire weekend and they made us feel like a part of the family.

“It was a no brainer after getting to know the rest of the coaching staff and understanding the principles and values they stand on. I want to be a part of something special and I believe they have the right people in the building to achieve a national championship in the near future.”

The versatile defender out of one of the top high school programs in the country has visited Washington three times and he loves the environment. The campus feel, the scenery and the people fit what he is looking for.

“The relationship between me and the staff was a big part of my commitment. The more I got to know doach Rich (John Richardson) the more I wanted to be a part of what he’s building over there. As well as the location, I visit Washington at least once a year due to my brother living in Tacoma, it’s like a second home for me and my family.”

Lavender went on about his connection to coach Richardson.

“I am close to Coach Rich., as he makes sure to call and check up on me  at least a few times a week. We have a built a strong relationship since they offered me in late January. I believe he is a great person off the field, which allows him to be a great coach. Getting to know him more and learn the principles and values he stands on is what made me gravitate towards the school. He reminds me a lot of my father and we trust in him to develop me into a great young man as well as an amazing football player.”

The official visit is locked in for May 30. He can’t wait to be back on camous and eventually to join the program run by Jedd Fisch.

“The idea of being able to become apart of DBU continues to excite me,” Lavender said. “I really believe they have the people and the tools necessary to win a National Championship in the years to come… Starting with the class of 2026.”
