California wide receiver Marquez Dortch enters Transfer Portal
California Golden Bears wide receiver Marquez Dortch has entered the Transfer Portal. He previously played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Dortch spent the 2023 season with the Golden Bears. However, he saw minimal playing time and didn’t record a stat at Cal. That season, the Golden Bears went 6-7 and played in the Independence Bowl. Prior to that, he spent one season at Mississippi State. There, he played in one game and recorded one catch for one yard. That was the last season of Mike Leach‘s tenure before his death.
Marquez Dortch played high school football at George County (Mississippi), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 215 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
2023 was the final season for Cal before the program moves to the ACC under head coach Justin Wilcox.
In high school, Dortch had 41 receptions for 660 yards and seven touchdown catches as a senior. He also had 19 carries for 140 yards as well as 207 yards and one touchdown on five kickoff returns. Along with football, he also played basketball in high school.

California and the Transfer Portal
The Spring Transfer Portal window is open and California, like seemingly every other school, has been busy with players both moving on from the program and into the program. This comes amid the transition to a new conference.
California has been particularly busy and currently has the 14th-ranked transfer class this cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. That class currently has 20 players who have left the program, with another 16 who are joining the program.
Marquez Dortch is included in the 20 players who have left the program to this point. Of those who have left the program, five have landed at power conference programs. Among those joining the program, eight are coming in from power conferences. Another four are coming from the Group of Five. Meanwhile, California is also adding four players from the FCS.
Ahead of the 2024 season, one goal for head coach Justin Wilcox is going to be getting the roster to as close to 85 scholarship players as possible.
