Cam Rising injury update: Pete Thamel shares latest on QB's status vs. Utah State, beyond
Cam Rising is considered a game-time decision for this week’s game against Utah State, but “there’s an expectation” he will be unavailable, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. However, he’s expected to be ready for the Big 12 opener vs. Oklahoma State as he works back from a hand injury.
Rising left last week’s game against Baylor after running into a cooler during the first half. He didn’t return, although Kyle Whittingham indicated the seventh-year quarterback likely avoided a serious injury.
Isaac Wilson took over against Baylor, and Thamel said he’d get the start against Utah State if Rising is unable to go. It would mark his first career start.
“So far, the latest I heard today is Cam Rising, they’re calling a game-time decision,” Thamel said Friday on College Football Live. “There’s an expectation he doesn’t play and Zach Wilson’s younger brother, Isaac, gets his first career start. He came in in the second half last week against Baylor, he was just okay. I think he was 4 of 9 passing, and Utah’s offense went a little bit flat.

“The one thing I am certain about with Cam Rising is that there’s an expectation he’ll be back in two weeks when they go to Stillwater for that Big 12 showdown against Oklahoma State. They’re being careful with his hand. We’ll see if he ends up playing in Logan on Saturday.”
Rising’s injury occurred with less than two minutes to play in the second quarter. He immediately reached for his hand when he hit the ground, and after evaluation in the tent, headed back to the locker room.
After the game, Whittingham said Rising likely avoided a serious injury. However, details were scarce during his postgame interview on FOX.

“We don’t think it’s serious,” Whittingham told Allison Williams. “That’s all I’ve been told. So let’s hope that is the case.”
At the time of his injury, Rising completed 8 of 14 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson came in to replace him as Utah took a 23-3 lead into halftime.
Rising is in his seventh season of college football after missing the 2023 campaign because of his recovery from a significant knee injury. He didn’t waste much time in his season debut, throwing a 64-yard touchdown pass against Southern Utah in his first game action since 2022.
In that season-opening victory, Rising didn’t miss a beat. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 254 yards and five touchdowns before handing the keys over to Wilson in the 49-0 victory.
