After a week of uncertainty about the status of quarterback Cam Rising the Utah Utes now know that he will not start for the Utah Utes game against rival Utah State Aggies. Instead, it will be Isaac Wilson, the younger brother of NFL quarterback Zach Wilson, per Pete Thamel. Rising will be dressed and warmed up for the game, per Thamel.

This comes a week after Rising was injured in Utah’s win over Baylor and was forced to come out of that game. It was an apparent hand injury that he suffered when he went to the ground. Importantly, the injury was to his throwing hand. Later, Rising would be seen on the sidelines in street clothes.

When he was on the sideline after coming out of Utah’s win, Cam Rising was observed wearing a bandage on his two middle fingers. However, in his post-game press conference, head coach Kyle Whittingham said, “We don’t think it’s serious.”

Before leaving the Baylor game with the injury, Cam Rising was playing well, throwing for 92 yards and two touchdowns. He would be replaced by true freshman Isaac Wilson at quarterback. Wilson was less consistent than Rising, completing four of nine passes for 30 yards. Still, with him running the offense, Utah was able to hold on to win and move to 2-0 on the season.

Injuries have become an issue for Cam Rising in his career. He suffered a major knee injury in the Rose Bowl following the 2022 season against Penn State. That kept him from playing at all during 2023, instead taking the year off medically. However, Utah fans consistently hoped he would return throughout the season.

Utah has found tons of success during Cam Rising’s time with the program. That’s included two seasons where the Utes made runs to the Rose Bowl. Now, in their first season in the Big 12, Utah expects to compete at the top of the conference. However, they’ll need a healthy Rising to do so.

For his career, Cam Rising has completed 64 percent of his passes for 5,918 yards and 53 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. He averages 12.5 yards per completion. On top of all of that, he’s rushed for 999 career yards with 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Utah and Utah State will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
