Cam Ward breaks down friendship with Kyron Drones, what it will be like facing him
Miami quarterback Cam Ward will be facing off against a close friend when the Hurricanes take on Virginia Tech on Sept. 27.
The Texas natives have known each other for years and train together during the offseason. Ward spoke at the ACC Kickoff Event about his friendship with Kyron Drones and what it will be like going up against him.
“He’s real good. Being able to work with Kyron from high school all the way to now, and seeing his progress, I’d probably say he’s gotten way more fluid as a passer,” Cam Ward said. “I thought he was very stiff as we were in high school. He’s way better now. He’s very more accurate now. You obviously know about his running abilities. He’s been doing that since he was a little kid. So I think he’s going to have a great year this year, for sure.”
Drones threw for more than 2,000 yards last season and rushed for more than 800 in his first year as the starting quarterback at Virginia Tech.
Ward also has some rushing ability but is more of a pure passer. He threw for more than 3,700 yards last season as Washington State, before transferring to Miami.
While the two talk regularly, they will put those conversations on hold ahead of the Virginia Tech vs. Miami ACC showdown.
“This is the last time that me and Kyron are going to be associating until we play Virginia Tech,” Cam Ward said with a laugh.

The two will also have a friendly wager on the line for the critical ACC contest.
“I’m going to let him make the bet. I’m going to let him make the bet and I’m going to match it,” Ward said.
Cam Ward explains decision to pass on NFL Draft, transfer to Miami
One of the biggest storylines of the early offseason was transfer quarterback Cam Ward‘s decision to either commit to a school out of the NCAA transfer portal, or keep his name in the NFL Draft
He ultimately chose to stay in college and opted to transfer to Miami for his final season of collegiate eligibility. The presumed ‘Canes QB1 recently opened up on the thought process that led him to withdraw from the NFL Draft cycle and choose to land in Coral Gables.
“A lot went into that decision,” Ward said at ACC Media Days. “That’s probably one of the most stressful times in my life. Me, my mom, my dad. Every day my decision changed. Went into my parents’ room. I told them one day I was going to this school. Next day I was going to the league, next day I was going to Miami. If I had to do it all over again, I would.
“The biggest thing for me is there was still food left on the table for me. I accomplished a lot of things at the FCS level, I haven’t accomplished things I know I’m capable of at the Power Five level. I feel like NFL isn’t going anywhere. God put me in this position to be a Miami Hurricane. I think it’s been the best of both worlds.”
