Junior Carl Cherenfant’s recruitment is starting to take a high-major shape. The hyper-explosive Cherenfant has helped lead his Fort Lauderdale (FL) Calvary Christian to a 14-2 start to the season.
“I am a versatile guard,” Cherenfant told On3 Sports. “I play hard on both ends of the floor and guard multiple positions, put pressure on the basket, and get to my mid-range shot. I’ve started to shoot the ball more consistently off the catch, and I am becoming more consistent with my shot-making. I watch a lot of young Dwayne Wade with his pace and patience. I see the speed DeAaron Fox plays with, the pressure he puts on the rim.”
The 6-foot-5 wing finished this summer with the Georgia Stars program on Nike’s 16u EYBL circuit. Carl Cherenfant discussed his recruitment exclusively with On3 Sports.
“From the schools who have offered, I am hearing a lot from Memphis, Virginia Tech, Kansas State, Iona, and South Florida,” Cherenfant said. “I have been on unofficial visits to Florida and Georgia, but they haven’t offered.”
Cherenfant talks recruitment
Memphis: “Penny Hardaway is the catalyst there. They have had some big recruiting classes over these past couple of years. Their style of play the toughness they play with stand out. The coaching staff’s knowledge of helping me develop for the next level is important.”
Virginia Tech: “They play hard and are resilient; that is the type of team they are with Mike Young at the helm. I like their system, the way they move the ball, and how they do things up there.”

Kansas State: “They think I am one of the best guards in the class of 2023. They like my ability to play on both ends of the floor, my shot-making ability, and guard multiple positions.”
On my trip to Georgia, Athens was a great place to visit, the town and the campus; I enjoyed it. For Florida, I went to Gainsville for the Alabama football game, so the atmosphere was crazy. I like the system head coach Mike White has. I don’t think either of them has seen my full game; once they do, they’ll think I’m one of the best guards in 2023.
“Florida, Miami, Maryland, and Georgia might all be close to offering,” Cherenfant said.
Cherenfant’s take
“I plan to go on visits to Memphis, Kansas State, and Florida,” Cherenfant said. “I’m going on my first official visit to Kansas State March 5-7. I’ll be looking for a family-oriented system where I can fit in. A school that will put me in the best position to succeed and put me in a position to help the team succeed and win. I will be looking at how they set me up for the next level after college.”
On3’s take
Carl Cherenfant is a highly explosive wing. He competes with fire and can be a difference-maker on the defensive end, guarding multiple positions. Cherenfant’s offensive game has developed, showing the capability to score in the half-court, off the bounce. He continues getting better, and his game is trending in the right direction.
