While we’re just five weeks into the college football season, several coaches have already been let go. Some were foreseen while others were complete shocks. No everyone’s job is as safe as even they may think, but the coaches listed in CBS Sports’ updated Hot Seat Rankings need to start gaining some traction.

Amongst the update are some familiar names who have underachieved and may be out of a job at the very least by the end of the season. However, there is some movements for some coaches who have gained more job security based on the start of their 2022 seasons.

Heating Up

  • Jeff Scott, USF
    Record: 1-4, 4-22 Overall
Rating: 3 – Pressure Is Mounting

Cooling Down

Bryan Harsin is naturally the hottest name in these discussions. Some see it as only a matter of time before he’s replaced as head coach of the Auburn Tigers. One surprising name to join the list, though, is fellow SEC coach Jimbo Fisher. After Texas A&M’s 3-2 start and a lot of conference games left to play, Fisher may find himself in a hole quickly by the end of year five in College Station.

In contrast, a pair of ACC coaches have fallen down the list due to near perfect starts. Dino Babers has Syracuse off to one of their best starts in program history as the No. 22 team in the nation. Meanwhile, Mike Norvell has taken a major step up in Tallahassee with an undefeated start at Florida State before their loss over the weekend to Wake Forest.

With some coaches already getting the boot, some of these coaches better take note. Schools are showing they have no problem buying out or letting go of almost anyone, regardless of their perceived job security. Their best way of avoiding it, though, would be to get a win this weekend during Week 6.
