We’re a week and a half into the college basketball season and we’ve already seen things shake up in a big way. Some of the big-name brands have made their mark early while others have stumbled out of the gate. That’s why, in Thursday morning’s latest update to the CBS Sports Top 25 and 1, Gary Parrish showed some big movement in his rankings.

The update features a new No. 1 as the Texas Longhorns leaped all the way up to the No. 1 spot. From there, North Carolina, Houston, Kansas, and Gonzaga round out the Top-5.

The Gonzaga vs. Texas game on Wednesday night was the massive swing in this updated ranking. The Longhorns hosted the Bulldogs and made a very loud statement in their 93-74 win over the Zags in Austin. Chris Beard’s team led by as much as 23 in the rout, which capitalized a 3-0 start for Texas where they’re winning by a margin of 28.3 points per game.

Mark Few’s Bulldogs were the biggest droppers as they fell four spots after the loss. Their close call against Michigan State may have also factored into the drop too. However, they have a chance to right any of those wrongs as they’ll host Kentucky in Spokane this weekend in one of the non-conference season’s biggest games.

North Carolina now sits at No. 2 as, although they’re 3-0, the Tar Heels have yet to truly dominate an opponent. Meanwhile, Houston, Kansas, Arkansas, and Baylor have all come out to strong starts. On the flip side, teams like Kentucky, Duke, and Tennessee have already stumbled early with losses.

We’ve seen a lot of storylines emerge so far to start this season. With early season tournaments about to tip off, we should see even more as teams had into the second weekend of the season. As of now, though, the Longhorns will lead the way in CBS’ rankings as the second week of the year wraps up.
