State of Texas bookends rankings
No. 1 on the list is the Texas Longhorns, thanks to wins in Austin against Creighton and Gonzaga. Head coach Chris Beard has done a fantastic job of working both the transfer portal and recruiting, with Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell being significant contributors early on.
More tests will be on the way for Texas to prove themselves even further, with Tuesday night against Iowa in the Jimmy V Classic being the first. Before the calendar turns to 2023, Big 12 Conference play will begin where the grind will really begin.
Twenty-five spots further down the rankings are the Texas Tech Red Raiders, who are expected to compete with Texas at the top of the Big 12. While Mark Adams’ team left the Maui Invitational with two losses, there is still hope in Lubbock for a great season.

For now, there is still a bit of ‘prove it’ thoughts out there. But having four players averaging double figures in scoring at the moment does help.
Six total SEC representatives, three inside the top 10
As of right now, the SEC looks like it could be the most competitive conference in college basketball this season. Six teams are ranked in the CBS Sports Top 25 and 1, with three being in the top 10.
Arkansas comes in at No. 6, with Alabama just a spot behind. Mississippi State is just one of three undefeated teams remaining in the conference, currently sitting at 8-0.
