CBS Sports updates college football QB Power Rankings following spring football

Following spring football, Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports has updated his College Football Quarterback Power Rankings.
There’s a myriad of talent littered throughout the sport in 2023. Once again, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner will return to the college game for another go-round, as USC’s Caleb Williams will hope to defend his crown.
Meanwhile, quarterbacks like Drake Maye of North Carolina and Texas’ Quinn Ewers will be looking to unseat Williams, and lift some trophies of their own in 2023. The talent is there, and nobody will put it past them to lead their teams to glory.
There’s plenty of new faces in the College Football Quarterback Power Rankings, as the 2023 NFL Draft saw many of last seasons top signal-callers move on to the next level. From former Alabama star Bryce Young to Ohio State’s CJ Stroud and Georgia’s Stetson Bennett, an embarrassment of star-power moved on to the NFL. Some new faces will be tasked with taking some for themselves.
Alas, here’s who Fornelli believes will do so in 2023, as he made his rankings following the end of spring football.

College Football QB Power Rankings following spring football, via CBS Sports:
- Caleb Williams, USC Trojans
- Drake Maye, North Carolina Tar Heels
- Quinn Ewers, Texas Longhorns
- Michael Penix Jr., Washington Huskies
- Sam Hartman, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

As you can see, Williams leads the pack to no one’s surprise, with Maye and Ewers following suit. It remains to be seen if the Tar Heels and Longhorns quarterbacks can catch the USC star, but it’ll be a fascinating battle to watch unfold throughout 2023.
Afterwards, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. is hoping to lead an electric Huskies offense to a Pac-12 title in 2023, and he has the talent around him to do so. Rounding out the top five is none other than freshly-minted Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Sam Hartman, who will have some high expectations dropped upon his shoulders throughout his first season in South Bend.
There’s a bevy of talented signal callers in the college game for the 2023 season, perhaps even more than we saw last season. It’s going to be fun to watch them all grow and make some highlight plays throughout the year.
