Charles Barkley makes national championship prediction while wearing giant cowboy hat

A national champion will be crowned on Monday night in Houston. UConn will enter as heavy favorites over San Diego State in Houston but with how this year’s tournament has gone, anything is possible. Huge opportunities are ahead of both programs as they look to cut down the nets after the final buzzer sounds.

Over the past day, everybody has weighed in and given their predictions for the game. Of course, Charles Barkley was one of those but he did so in a hilarious fashion. Barkley decided to wear a giant red cowboy hat during the pregame show.

With the game taking place deep in the heart of Texas, Barkley was just going along with the theme.

Barkley then decided to go away from the popular opinion, picking San Diego State to win. While UConn has been dominant all NCAA Tournament, Barkley is banking on the Aztecs’ ability to play hard. A bold prediction for sure.

“I think will is going to win tonight,” Barkley said. “I’m going with the upset tonight. The Aztec Nation! Yes!”

Barkley has never been afraid to have some fun on TV. He does so every week during the NBA season on TNT, teaming up with Shaq, Ernie Johnson, and Kenny Smith. There have been plenty of laughs shared between that group. Barkley is just now bringing his personality into college basketball.

Charles Barkley only analyst to pick San Diego State

Of the four analysts working the pregame show, Barkley was the only one to pick San Diego State. He has a lot of faith in the Aztecs, despite the good basketball head coach Dan Hurley having seen his team play. Barkley has never been afraid to go against the crowd and did so once again on Monday night.

San Diego State has been tested, not having the easiest path to the national championship game. They took down No. 1 overall seed Alabama in the Sweet Sixteen before escaping against Creighton in the following round. And while FAU might have been a nine-seed, they sported the most wins in all of college basketball.

Head coach Brian Dutcher has Final Four experience as well, even though it was with Michigan as an assistant coach. Defense has been their name of the game while making timely shots in clutch scenarios as we say play out in the final seconds against FAU. Barkley expects them to do the same against UConn.
