Charlotte expected to part ways with head coach Biff Poggi
Charlotte is expected to part ways with head coach Biff Poggi, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Tim Brewster will be named interim head coach.
Poggi spent less than two seasons as the 49ers head coach and amassed a 6-16 record over the span. According to Nakos, Charlotte is expected to owe Poggi a $1.3 million buyout.
The 49ers are in the midst of a 3-7 start to the season and are coming off a 59-24 loss to South Florida on Saturday. They’ve lost their last four games after starting the season 3-3. Charlotte’s last victory came on Oct. 5 in a 55-24 blowout against East Carolina.
Before being hired at Charlotte, Poggi spent three seasons as the associate head coach for the Michigan Wolverines. Alongside Jim Harbaugh, Poggi helped play a role in leading the Wolverines to back-to-back Big Ten Championships over the span.

Poggi replaced Will Healy for the job, who was also let go before the end of the 2022 season after losing seven of the first eight games of his fourth season as the 49ers’ coach. Healy was 15-24 in his four seasons at Charlotte. Poggi was not on track to beating that record.
Before he was hired, Poggi returned to Michigan in 2021 after serving as the head coach at Saint Frances Academy in Maryland. He previously worked at Michigan as an analyst in 2016 before he headed back to the high school level. He was seen as a key assistant under Jim Harbaugh, leading to his hire at Charlotte.
The 49ers will move forward with Brewster for the final two games of the regular season. While bowl eligibility is out of the question for the 49ers at this point in the year, they can end the season on a high note beginning on Saturday against Florida Atlantic and again vs. UAB in Week 14. Both teams are 2-8 at the moment — so getting to five wins before the season is over isn’t out fo the question for Charlotte.
