Charlotte targeting Ohio coach Tim Albin as new head coach
The Charlotte 49ers are set to hire Ohio head coach Tim Albin, On3’s Pete Nakos reported on Saturday night. The Bobcats just made a historic run to their first MAC Championship since 1968 earlier on Saturday. They thrashed the Miami Redhawks, 38-3, in one of the most impressive performances for the Bobcat program in several years. Ohio managed to score touchdowns on every complete possession except two, which resulted in a field goal and the team’s lone punt in final minutes of the third quarter.
Charlotte’s former head coach Biff Poggi was recently fired in November, after going 6-16 during his two seasons there. The 49ers lost four games by 30 points or more during the 2024 campaign, and shortly after Charlotte lost 59-24 to the South Florida Bulls, the school decided to move on from Poggi.
The past three years Albin managed to guide Ohio to three straight 10-win seasons, and he won MAC Coach of the Year honors two times (2022 and 2024). In 2005, Albin joined Frank Solich at Ohio, when Solich took over the reigns as the head coach for Ohio football.
Albin was the offensive coordinator/running backs coach for the Bobcats since 2005, but added the extra title of associate head coach in February of 2019.
That was when defensive coordinator Jimmy Burrow retired from the program. In July of 2021, Albin was promoted to head coach for Ohio football, following the unexpected retirement of Bobcat legend Frank Solich.

Albin’s first season at Ohio was a rough one, the Bobcats went 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference. But he quickly found his footing and righted the ship quickly in Athens, rattling off three straight 10-win seasons, culminating in the school’s first MAC Football Championship in 55 years on Saturday night.
Ohio already knows their destination in the postseason, as the Bobcats will face off against Jacksonville State in the Cure Bowl in Orlando, Florida (Camping World Stadium).
Previously, Albin also was the head coach for Northwestern Oklahoma State, which he guided to a 25-8 overall record during his three years at the helm (1997-199). His best season with Northwest Oklahoma State came in 1999, when they went 13-0 overall and won the NAIA Championship.
