Chuck Bailey is back from injury; Talks San Diego St and New Mexico
Chuck Bailey, III was one of the top point guards in Westfield, Indiana, for Session 1 of the UAA Circuit. The 6-foot-3 junior from Los Angeles (CA) Donda Academy had a host of schools sitting courtside to watch.
“I am a scoring combo guard by nature,” Bailey told On3. “But lately, I have been working on becoming more of a true point guard. I know down my open shots and make my reads getting to my spots. I watch a lot of point guards who can score, Dame Lillard, I watch a lot of TyTy Washington. TyTy is a bigger guard who can score while still getting his teammates involved; that is how I want to play.”
He led his Arizona Select 17u team to two wins while averaging 9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. On3 caught up with Chuck Bailey to get a feel for what schools are prioritizing him.
“I took one visit, an unofficial to Loyola-Marymount,” Bailey said. “Since I went to school at Los Angeles (CA) Donda Academy, it has been hard to go on many visits. Of the schools who have offered me, Loyola-Marymount and New Mexico I hear from the most,” Bailey said. “I also hear a lot from Cal-Berkley and San Diego State. I’m looking to set up junior-year official visits with New Mexico and San Diego State; I am not sure about California just yet.”
Bailey talks recruitment
San Diego State: “I like their coaching staff. Coach JayDee (Luster), that’s my guy. He is always calling, checking in on me, how I’m doing. I really like how they are always in contact.”
New Mexico: “Coach (Isaac) Chew stayed up with me all year, making sure I was straight, checking in on how things were going with my injury. They have a lot of guards and let their guards go; I like that.”

“We are hearing a lot from Arizona State,” Bailey said. “I think they could be close to offering with how they’re talking.”
Bailey’s take
“I want to go somewhere that I feel comfortable with a family feel,” Bailey said. “I also know I can be a pro; I’m going to be looking for a place with that same vision. Somewhere that can develop me to be a pro in a few years.”
Bailey’s lineage
Bailey’s dad, Chuck Bailey, Jr., was a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward who played at Michigan and Detroit. Bailey, Jr. averaged 10.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game for his senior season.
On3’s take
Chuck Bailey is a bigger guard. He has broad shoulders and long arms. What stood out about his game was his ability to change pace. He is a good athlete, but his ability to alter speeds got him anywhere he wanted on the floor. Bailey toggled the line between scorer and facilitator well. You would like to see him continue learning the reads once he is in the paint and more confident in his three-point shot. Looking at his ability to touch the paint and the projectability of his frame, you see what these college programs are seeing in his game.
