The Clemson Tigers were mercilessly throttling the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday night. Unfortunately for them, safety Tyler Venables was ejected in the second half for targeting. That means he won’t be available for the first half of the Tigers’ next game in two weeks vs. NC State.

Venables is the son of former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who is now the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. Tyler Venables entered the 2024 campaign with 98 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and seven pass breakups in 716 defensive snaps over 36 games (two starts). He battled injuries for much of the 2023 season but served as a student coach on the sidelines.

In the 2020 cycle, Tyler Venables was rated as a three-star prospect and the No. 1119 overall player in America, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He played his high school football at Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina and actually set records there as a quarterback. Venables hung up his cleats there as the school’s career passing yardage leader with 6,927 yards, racking up 73 touchdown passes and 38 rushing touchdowns in just three years. He helped guide Daniel to an 11-1 record and the third round of the state playoffs as the team’s starting quarterback in 2019.

He set a school record for single season passing yardage his senior year, when he threw for 3,281 yards, while connecting on 253 of his 374 passes. Venables tallied four straight 300-yard games and three straight five-touchdown games at various points in the season. He finished with 48 total touchdowns running and passing. As a defender, he also started there, tallying 75 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and four interceptions in 2019.

Venables being out didn’t matter much, Clemson put up near perfect numbers across the board

Clemson orchestrated one of the biggest blowout victories of Dabo Swinney’s career on Saturday night, throttling App State to the tune of a 66-20 win. Quarterback Cade Klubnik was nearly flawless, completing 24 of 26 passes for 378 yards, while tossing in five touchdowns with no interceptions. Running back Phil Mafah had 10 carries for 118 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Bryant Wesco and tight end Jake Briningstool had great performances, with Wesco finishing with three catches for 130 yards and one touchdown. Briningstool finished with seven catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Clemson put up the most points ever scored under Dabo Swinney in the first half (56), and they also racked up the most offensive yardage (525 total yards) ever in the Swinney era at the school.
