Clemson safety Sherrod Covil Jr. plans to enter transfer portal
Clemson safety Sherrod Covil Jr. plans to enter the transfer portal, he tells On3. The former four-star recruit and top-200 prospect will have one year of eligibility remaining.
Through the course of his career with the Tigers, Covil registered 36 tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass deflection. He missed the back half of his 2023 season with a torn ACL and spent much of the offseason recovering.
“He’s exactly what you’re looking for,” Dabo Swinney said about Covil near the end of the 2022 season. “Felt like he was, had a lot of immaturity within the program in the first part of the season. Really probably since probably the Florida State game, he’s kind of I think made a turn. Just kind of really got on a good groove on what he needs to do.”

Covil’s departure makes the second of the season for Clemson. Wide receiver Troy Stellato announced earlier this week he plans to enter the transfer portal. The Tigers are ranked No. 17 in the nation and are 9-3 entering Saturday’s ACC title game against No. 8 SMU slated for 8 p.m. ET.
The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year.
