Clemson transfer DB Sherrod Covil commits to Virginia Tech
Clemson transfer defensive back Sherrod Covil committed to Virginia Tech, he announced via social media. He entered the transfer portal Dec. 9 with one year of eligibility remaining.
Covil spent three years at Clemson and was in the midst of a strong 2023 season before a season-ending injury. In eight games, he totaled 10 tackles prior to a torn ACL, which ended his year. In 2024, he had 12 tackles and a pass defended.
All told, during his three years at Clemson, Covil totaled 36 tackles and a tackle for loss. Now, he’s heading to Virginia Tech for his senior season.

“He’s exactly what you’re looking for,” Dabo Swinney said about Covil near the end of the 2022 season. “Felt like he was, had a lot of immaturity within the program in the first part of the season. Really probably since probably the Florida State game, he’s kind of I think made a turn. Just kind of really got on a good groove on what he needs to do.”
Sherrod Covil is the first transfer commitment for Brent Pry and Virginia Tech. The Hokies went 6-6 on the season in Pry’s third year as head coach, which secured their second straight bowl game appearance. They will take on Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Virginia Tech also got some welcome news at the quarterback position last week. Quarterbacks Kyron Drones and William “Pop” Watson announced they’re returning next season, providing some stability in the offense.
