Coastal Carolina hiring former QB Grayson McCall to staff as offensive analyst
Coastal Carolina is hiring former quarterback Grayson McCall to the football staff as an offensive analyst, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports.
McCall played at Coastal Carolina for five seasons from 2019 through 2023, where he broke multiple school records. He also won Sun Belt Player of the Year on three separate occasions while playing for the Chanticleers.
McCall transferred to NC State for his sixth and final year of eligibility this past offseason, where he finished the season with 518 passing yards and three touchdowns across four games before he retired due to medical concerns regarding head injuries.
“Unfortunately, my dream has been cut just short. As you all know I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from,” McCall wrote when announcing his medical retirement. “I have done everything I can to continue, but this is where the good Lord has called me to serve in a different space. Brain specialists, my family, and I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to hang the cleats up.”
He couldn’t stay away from football for long, however, and is now beginning his transition to the coaching scene. It appears there’s no better place to start than at the place where his name sits in the record books.

McCall revealed that he wanted to get into coaching upon his retirement, stating: “I look forward to taking my passion and love for the game into the coaching space to serve and lead the next group of kids with a dream.”
His credentials include seeing him put together an impressive three-year run from 2020-22, throwing for at least 20 touchdowns each season. His biggest campaign came in 2021 when he completed 73% of his passes for 2,873 yards and 27 touchdowns.
During his time with the Chanticleers, McCall threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns.
Before college, McCall was a three-star recruit and the No. 156 overall quarterback in the 2019 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.
As he’s set to rejoin the Coastal Carolina football program in a new role, he’ll coach his first game on Aug. 30 against Virginia on the road. His first game back in Conway, however, is against Charleston Southern the following week.
