The Purdue Boilermakers couldn’t hang on to the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll after ascending to the top for the first time in program history. However, they’re not alone in their inability to remain at the forefront — it’s been a rotating door of No. 1 ranked teams since the season began.

After Gonzaga fell, it was Duke who got the familiar treatment at the top of the mountain. However, the Blue Devils couldn’t hold on to the spot, opening the door for Purdue to takeover the reigns. Then, a miraculous shot by Rutgers forward Ron Harper Jr. ended the feelings of joy felt by the Boilermakers.

After feeling disrespected by the preseason polls, the Baylor Bears have been trending upwards in their championship defense. Now 9-0 and fresh off dismantling Villanova, perhaps there’s no better candidate for the No. 1 spot than Baylor.

After the Bears, former No. 1’s in Gonzaga and Duke remain quality candidates. Additionally, the UCLA Bruins remain steadfast — racking up wins with their lone loss on the season coming against Gonzaga.
