A new No. 1 team – again
While Purdue was on top of the USA Today Coaches Poll last week, it’s Baylor that has taken the top spot after Week 5 of action. The Bears, who are the reigning national champions, are off to a 9-0 start to the season after beating Villanova 57-36 on Sunday. Scott Drew’s squad moves into No. 1 after Purdue suffered a 70-68 loss to Rutgers on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer from the logo.
As Baylor dominated against Villanova and remained unbeaten and Purdue suffered its first loss of the year, Duke didn’t play a game last week and is still coming off its upset loss at Ohio State on Nov. 30. Among the other top-ranked teams, UCLA recorded a 67-56 win over Marquette and Kansas rolled to a 102-65 blowout against Missouri in the historical “Border War” rivalry.

A team that’s trending in the right direction and should be a scary opponent for anyone in the country is Alabama, which recorded a tough 83-82 win over Houston on Saturday. Nate Oats’ Crimson Tide squad is now 8-1 on the season with two top-15 wins over Gonzaga and Houston. They play at Memphis on Tuesday with a chance to win a fifth-straight game.
Arizona – which was ranked right above Alabama in last week’s Coaches Poll at No. 8 – defeated Illinois 83-79 on Saturday to improve to 9-0 on the year, and the Wildcats should be 11-0 heading into a Dec. 22 matchup with Tennessee.
