College Basketball Rankings: Florida, Iowa State upsets rock updated CBS Sports Top 25 and 1

It was a wild Tuesday night around the country in college basketball. Naturally, that led to CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish releasing his updated Top 25 and 1 rankings for Wednesday morning. It’s a ranking that includes multiple shakeups to where everyone stands now.
There were three teams, in particular, who went down. Most notably, the Florida Gators dropped a game to the Georgia Bulldogs. They weren’t alone in getting upset, though, with Iowa State and Mississippi State both dropping games as well, leading to some movement in the rankings.
With all of that in mind, here’s how CBS Sports decided to shake up its Top 25 and 1 rankings after a Tuesday night with multiple upsets.
1. Auburn Tigers
Previous ranking: 1
The Auburn Tigers haven’t moved off the top overall spot in the CBS Top 25 and 1 rankings since the last ones came out. That’s no surprise, given that the Tigers haven’t played a game since the last rankings. So, the Tigers remain atop the SEC after playing one of the toughest schedules in all of college basketball.
Auburn’s next game is coming on Wednesday night against Ole Miss. That’s expected to be another tough game and one that the Tigers could get upset in. So, avoiding that will likely be key to avoiding a drop-off in the rankings the next time they come out.
2. Duke Blue Devils
Previous ranking: 2
The Duke Blue Devils dominated the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday night, beating them by 37 points. That win moved Duke to 16-1 in ACC play and a full game ahead of Louisville in the current conference standings. That’s put them in an excellent position heading for the final stretch of the season.
Many around Duke would argue they should be at the top of the CBS Top 25 and 1 rankings, given that they played and beat Auburn this season. However, the difference between the two tends to come down to their strength of schedules. Still, Duke is expected to make noise in the NCAA Tournament.
3. Houston Cougars
Previous ranking: 3
The top ranked Big 12 team in the CBS Top 25 and 1 rankings are the Houston Cougars. They’re coming into these rankings off a seven-game winning streak and beat Texas Tech, a team who previously beat them, on Monday. With that, they’ve reestablished themselves as one of the most consistent teams in all of college basketball.
With three games left in the regular season for Houston, the Cougars have a comfortable lead in the Big 12 standings. So, now, the goal is to finish the season on a high note and build momentum going into the postseason.
4. Alabama Crimson Tide
Previous ranking: 5
The Alabama Crimson Tide are starting to move back up in the CBS Top 25 and 1 rankings. That comes after bouncing back from a tough two-game skid with two wins over ranked opponents in SEC play. That included blowing out Mississippi State on Tuesday, which forced the Bulldogs backward in the rankings too.
The final three games of Alabama’s schedule might be the toughest final stretch in all of college basketball. Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn remain. So, the Crimson Tide has the opportunity to finish strong and arguably end as the best team in the country, or they can hit a rough patch right before the SEC Tournament.
5. Tennessee Volunteers
Previous ranking: 6
The Tennessee Volunteers avoided an upset bid against an improving LSU team on Tuesday night. With that, they continued to move up in the rankings. That’s been boosted by winning six out of their last seven games too.
Catching up to Auburn to win the SEC in the regular season appears to be off the table. Still, the Volunteers have an opportunity to make a massive statement to the college basketball world on Saturday when they take on the Alabama Crimson Tide.
6. Michigan State Spartans
Previous ranking: 7
At sixth, the Michigan State Spartans are the top-ranked Big Ten team in the CBS Top 25 and 1 rankings. Winners of three in a row, including their last time out against Michigan, the Spartans haven’t played since last Friday. However, thanks to Florida’s loss, they still moved up.

With four games left in the season, the Spartans have three games against currently ranked opponents left. So, things don’t get easier from here for Michigan State. Given that they’re tied with Michigan and just 1.5 games ahead of Wisconsin, it’s bound to be an exciting finish to the regular season.
7. Florida Gators
Previous ranking: 4
The Florida Gators have been one of the best teams in the country this season. However, a loss on Tuesday night to Georgia forced them to slip in the rankings. That game ended a six-game winning streak and dropped them to 11-4 this season in SEC play.
It’s not impossible to win the SEC in the regular season for Florida, but it won’t be easy either. They’ll need to be nearly perfect and get some help from teams ahead of them. On top of that, the Gators have a tough schedule, starting with Texas A&M on Saturday.
8. St. John’s Red Storm
Previous ranking: 8
One of the best stories in college basketball this season has been the return to prominence for St. John’s. It’s a credit to how well head coach Rick Pitino has done, bringing an excellent defense and improved team overall to the program.
After beating UConn on Sunday, the Red Storm moved to 15-2 in Big East play, building on their lead in the conference title race. With three games left, nothing is decided just yet. However, St. John’s can take another step forward by beating Butler on Wednesday night.
9. Wisconsin Badgers
Previous ranking: 10
The Wisconsin Badgers suffered a tough loss on Saturday but have since bounced back with a dominant win over Washington. With that, they’ve found themselves in control of third place in the current Big Ten standings. Time is running out, but the Badgers are in the race there.
Next up is a very difficult road test against Michigan State. That game is going to go a long way in setting the tone for the final push in the regular season. From there, the hope is to make noise in the conference tournament.
10. Texas A&M Aggies
Previous ranking: 11
The Texas A&M Aggies are back in the Top 10 of the CBS Top 25 and 1 rankings. They did that without playing a game since Saturday, when they lost to Tennessee. That’s actually part of a two-game losing streak that the Aggies are currently on.
Texas A&M will hope to snap that losing streak Wednesday when they host Vanderbilt. At 9-5 in SEC play, they’re not realistically in the regular season race but they can also better position themselves for the conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
