History was made on Tuesday when Kansas lost to West Virginia. The Jayhawks had not lost a conference opener in 30 years but now begins Big 12 play 0-1. To make matters even more bizarre, the game occurred at Allen Fieldhouse, a rare home loss for KU.

As a result, CBS Sports has released an updated top 25 and 1. While there is not much movement at the top, the Kansas loss has caused for some chaos elsewhere in the rankings.

This top 25 from CBS will remain fluid throughout the college basketball season, especially as conference play fully gets underway across the country. For now, here is how it lines up on the first day of 2025.

1. Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee is the current No. 1 team in the polls and holds the place in the top 25 and 1. No blemishes are found on the Vols’ resume with multiple impressive wins on there too.

Being undefeated might be the tiebreaker between the team directly behind them. The journey is just now beginning though, as Tennessee starts SEC play on Saturday.

2. Auburn Tigers

Bruce Pearl scheduled quite the nonconference gauntlet for his team and nearly every single test has been passed. Just one loss is on the resume, not being able to win inside Cameron Indoor. Arguably nobody has been more impressive than Auburn.

Folks on the Plains feel as if they should have the top spot but will have plenty more opportunities to prove themselves. There will be no days off in the SEC but Auburn will feel quite prepared.

3. Iowa State Cyclones

As the calendar moves to 2025, Iowa State is currently the class of the Big 12. Earning a one-seed in the NCAA Tournament is certainly possible, something the program has never done.

Thus far, Auburn is the only team able to take down Iowa State, facing off in Maui. Grinding through a Big 12 season can be tough but the Cyclones certainly seemed ready task.

4. Duke Blue Devils

Being in this position is nothing new for Duke as Jon Scheyer as had plenty of success in his short time as head coach. However, having who many consider the best freshman in the country certainly add some extra spice in Durham.

Cooper Flagg has been on the national stage multiple times already and impressed. His growth will continue to be Duke’s main storyline as they take the No. 4 spot — and the only ACC team in the top 25.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

A third SEC team inside the top five, Alabama is ready to compete in what is currently college basketball’s toughest conference. Like their in-state rivals, Nate Oats put his team through the ringer before the New Year.

Alabama has a good mix of familiar faces and experienced players as the rotation continues to get sorted. As consistent as anyone the past few years, the Crimson Tide are prime to make another run.

6. Florida Gators

Controversy rocked the Florida program early in the season but it’s had no effect on the on-court performances. A 13-0 record mixed with offensive and defensive ratings inside KenPom’s top 15 proves to be a positive start.

This is the first team to be bumped up due to Kansas’ loss to West Virginia. Florida is up one spot to No. 6, adding to the SEC’s strength at the top.

7. Marquette Golden Eagles

The lone Big East team inside CBS’ top 25, Marquette is currently setting the pace. Shaka Smart‘s team already has a 3-0 record in conference play after taking down Providence on New Year’s Eve.

Kam Jones has emerged as one of college basketball’s bright stars, emerging as a candidate for the Wooden Award. It’s another team moving up in this latest top 25 and 1, bumped up by one.

8. Kentucky Wildcats

Could the Mark Pope era started any better for Kentucky? After a completely new roster and tons of uncertainty following the loss of John Calipari, UK has been flying under their former player.

Expectations in Lexington are always going to be high. But the great start this season has only elevated them, hoping the program can end what has been a brutal drought in recent times.

9. Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State has not lost since before Thanksgiving, going six in a row. It’s been a mix of fluff noncon games, some Big Ten opponents, and the taking down of another blue blood, North Carolina.

It’s been a few years since Michigan State has been considered an elite team in a given year, not being higher than a seven-seed 2021. But Tom Izzo appears to have his team rolling in 2024-25.

10. UCLA Bruins

As weird as it still sounds, UCLA is the second consecutive Big Ten team inside the top 10. A pair of West Coast Big Ten wins are already secured plus a recent nonconference win against Gonzaga.

UCLA missed the NCAA Tournament last season but looks prime to get back into the field. Potentially even do some damage along the way, hoping to bring home national championship No. 12.
