College basketball rankings: Multiple ranked losses result in shakeup to CBS Sports Top 25 and 1

College basketball is a unique sport, in that games are played on virtually every day of the week, meaning the national outlook and the rankings are ever-shifting.

And there were plenty of matchups on both Tuesday and Wednesday night that have shaken up the latest Top 25 And 1 rankings from CBS Sports.

Today, On3 stops to take a look at the latest from the publication to see which teams have moved up some and which are fading in the latest edition of the rankings. There’s a lot to dive into, so buckle up.

1. Auburn Tigers

Auburn has lost only one game all year, falling on the road at Duke 84-78. Not a bad loss, by any means. Meanwhile, the current winning streak for the team is up to seven games, even as conference play gets underway.

The Tigers fended off a late surge from Texas on Tuesday night, winning 87-82 to stay at the top of CBS Sports’ college basketball ranking. Johni Broome was outstanding in in the win, posting 20 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.

2. Iowa State Cyclones

Tuesday night’s showdown with Utah resulted in a comfortable win for Iowa State, which cruised 82-59. Curtis Jones provided a lift with 23 points off the bench, while Tamin Lipsey also chipped in 20 in the winning effort.

Next up for Iowa State is a showdown on the road at Texas Tech. That gets followed up by back-to-back ranked opponents, first No. 11 Kansas, then at No. 21 West Virginia. We’ll learn a lot in that stretch.

3. Duke Blue Devils

Duke managed to cruise by Pittsburgh relatively easily on Tuesday night, posting an impressive 76-47 win. Cooper Flagg stole the show with a monster dunk, right after dribbling the length of the floor with ease.

The upcoming road is pretty navigable for the Blue Devils, too. First up is a home date with Notre Dame, then another home contest against Miami. Both teams rank near the bottom of the ACC in the standings.

4. Florida Gators

College basketball lost its last unbeaten team courtesy of Florida on Tuesday night. The Gators absolutely blitzed the Tennessee Volunteers from the start and kept the pedal to the metal in a 73-43 demolition.

The Gators are perhaps as well-rounded as any team in college basketball. The backcourt is ridiculously deep, while the frontcourt has a handful of hard-working, high-IQ players. Florida will travel to Arkansas on Saturday, with the Razorbacks gunning for their first conference win.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

It wasn’t the prettiest win for Alabama on Wednesday night, but a 20-point margin over South Carolina will do just fine. Coach Nate Oats used it as a learning opportunity for his bunch, sitting his starters at one point in the second half.

Alabama has now won seven straight games dating back to a two-point defeat to Oregon. Both of Alabama’s losses are high-quality ones, and the Crimson Tide are starting to rack up some impressive wins. The upcoming stretch provides more opportunities: at No. 10 Texas A&M, vs. No. 23 Ole Miss, at No. 6 Kentucky.

6. Marquette Golden Eagles

Marquette took down Georgetown on Tuesday night, securing a 74-66 win. Chase Ross went off for 27 points in the win, while also contributing six steals. The Marquette defense produced a whopping 16 steals in the game.

The Golden Eagles are off this weekend, but the following week affords some chances at relatively mismatched opponents. First up it’ll be a road trip to DePaul, followed by a home date with Xavier.

7. Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee suffered its first defeat of the season, losing 73-43 on the road at Florida. It was a tough loss, but one that the team can probably learn quite a good deal from, especially in what is expected to be a meat-grinder of a conference schedule.

Two tricky games are upcoming, starting this weekend with a road trip to a Texas team coming off a very competitive game with Auburn. Then it’s a home date with a Georgia team fresh off an upset of Kentucky.

8. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Mississippi State managed to mosey past Vanderbilt on Tuesday night with a 76-64 win. Any time you get out of Memorial Gymnasium with a win it’s a plus. AJ Hoggard scored a team-high 18 points in the victory.

The Bulldogs have jumped out to a 14-1 start to the season, with the lone loss to Butler. That hot start will be put to the test with the next four games: vs. No. 6 Kentucky, at No. 2 Auburn, vs. No. 23 Ole Miss, at No. 1 Tennessee.

9. Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State won its seventh straight game last Friday and has enjoyed some quality time off before things get crazy again. The Spartans have lost only two games this year, to then-No. 1 Kansas and to a solid Memphis squad.

Up next for the Spartans is a home date with Washington on Thursday evening. Then it’s a weekend date with Northwestern on the road. Both are winnable games.

10. Kentucky Wildcats

Like Florida, Kentucky is one of the teams already experiencing the volatility of SEC play despite being one of the best teams in college basketball. The Wildcats fell to Georgia on Tuesday night, dropping their third game of the season.

Kentucky can score with anyone in the country but needs to buckle down a bit more on the defensive end. Coach Mark Pope is also trying to get his team out of its habit of having a mid-half lapse that proves costly. Work in progress.
