College basketball rankings: Ranked SEC losses bring significant shakeup to CBS Sports top 25 and 1
With college basketball fielding as deep a top 25 as it has in years, the upsets are flying across the sport. Seemingly every night a new top-10 team or two is picked off, leaving the national picture ever more muddled.
CBS Sports has stopped to rank the current Top 25 And 1 in the sport, providing a running, oft-updated look at the best teams in the game right now.
Without further ado, let’s get into how CBS Sports’ college basketball rankings shake out following a handful of upsets on Tuesday night. We begin.
1. Auburn Tigers
No Johni Broome, no problem so far for Auburn, which made a win over No. 15 Mississippi State look pretty routine on Tuesday night. Chad Baker-Mazara led the way with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, keeping Auburn hot.
Of course, how quickly Broome can return to the lineup is the question everyone on The Plains wants to know. Auburn, as good as it is, isn’t quite the same team without the star big man.
2. Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State nearly fell on Saturday, trailing Texas Tech for most of the game before eventually forcing overtime and pulling out a win. Curtis Jones led the Cyclones off the bench with 26 points in the win.
The lone loss for Iowa State came by two points to the nation’s top-ranked team, Auburn. Next up will be a significant challenge, though: a date with No. 9 Kansas.
3. Duke Blue Devils
Duke has now reeled off 11 straight wins, one of the hottest teams in the country. The latest was a demolition of a down Miami team, 89-54. Kon Knueppel scored 25 in the win.
Now the test for the Blue Devils comes with a road swing. Games against Boston College and Wake Forest will both be played away from home, giving Duke a chance to prove its maturity.
4. Marquette Golden Eagles (+2)
Now winners of six straight games, Marquette survived a wild overtime game against DePaul on Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles scored 18 points during the five-minute overtime in a mad dash to the finish, winning 85-83.
Marquette has four double-figure scorers and can really stretch the floor, as evidenced against DePaul. Forward David Joplin scored 30 points in the win and went 7-of-13 from beyond the 3-point line. Impressive.
5. Tennessee Volunteers (+2)
Much was made of the team’s road loss at Florida, when Tennessee took an absolute pounding. But the Volunteers bounced back nicely over the weekend, knocking off Texas on the road to get back into the groove.
Now a tidy little challenge is shaping up on Wednesday night. Red-hot Georgia is coming to town, fresh off back-to-back wins over ranked SEC opponents. Can Tennessee avoid falling victim?
6. Kentucky Wildcats (+2)
Mark Pope‘s squad has now beaten back-to-back ranked opponents and has beaten three ranked opponents in the last four games. Kentucky can score with anyone; it’s been a matter of the defense locking in.

When Pope has his squad fully engaged on the defensive end of the floor, the team is as good as any in college basketball. Next up is a weekend date with No. 4 Alabama in Rupp Arena.
7. Florida Gators (-3)
Florida bounced back from its first loss of the season at Kentucky with that dominant win over Tennessee. Then it beat Arkansas and tripped up to Missouri, at home no less, on Tuesday night.
Todd Golden‘s squad takes a tumble down the college basketball rankings as a result. Florida needs to prove it can handle success a little better going forward, because home losses in the SEC this year will drive you out of title contention fast.
8. Alabama Crimson Tide (-3)
An eight-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday night, as Alabama fell on its home floor to No. 21 Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide just weren’t locked all the way in, and that’s a recipe for disaster in this year’s SEC.
The road isn’t going to get much easier in the short-term either. Up next is a road trip to face No. 8 Kentucky at Rupp Arena.
9. Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State won its ninth straight game over the weekend, knocking off Northwestern by double digits, 78-68. The team’s only two losses are to then-No. 1 Kansas and a quality Memphis team.
Tom Izzo is getting outstanding play from guard Jaden Akins, who is leading the team at 14.1 points per game. It’s been a well-rounded effort behind him. A home date with Penn State on Wednesday night looms.
10. Kansas Jayhawks (+1)
A team that started the year atop the college basketball world, Kansas is continuing to find itself as the season goes on. The latest three-game winning streak includes road wins at UCF and Cincinnati and a home win over Arizona State.
Now the big test arrives. Kansas will travel to Iowa State on Wednesday night for a showdown against the No. 2 team in college basketball.
