Each week, On3’s Matt Zenitz will select coordinators of the week from each Power 5 conference as well as an offensive and defensive coordinator of the week from the Group of 5 ranks.

Here are the On3 coordinators of the week from Week Two.

ACC

Virginia Tech DC Chris Marve
The buzz:
Led by Marve’s defense, Virginia Tech rebounded from a season-opening loss to Old Dominion with a 27-10 win over Boston College in its ACC opener. The Eagles’ offense, which features NFL prospects in QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers, was limited to 155 total yards. Marve’s unit posted five sacks and an interception, limited BC to 4 rushing yards and held the Eagles to 2-of-15 on third downs.

Big 12

Iowa State DC Jon Heacock
The buzz:
Behind Heacock’s defense, Matt Campbell got his first win over Iowa after losses in each of his first five games against the Hawkeyes. In the 10-7 victory, Heacock’s group forced three turnovers and allowed only 150 yards. The Hawkeyes’ lone score, a first-quarter touchdown, came after a blocked punt gave them the ball at Iowa State’s 16.

Big Ten

Illinois DC Ryan Walters
The buzz:
Walters’ defense held the ACC’s top-ranked offense from last season to 222 yards and 0-of-16 on third downs in a 24-3 win over Virginia. Cavs QB Brennan Armstrong finished 13-of-32 with two interceptions. Standout WR Dontayvion Wicks, meanwhile, had just two catches for 23 yards. Through three games, Walters’ defense has limited Virginia, Indiana and Wyoming to a combined average of 10.7 points per game.

Pac-12

Washington State DC Brian Ward
The buzz:
Washington State got a big road win over No. 19 Wisconsin despite only 253 yards and 10 first downs from the Cougars’ offense. While Wisconsin gained 401 yards, Ward’s defense had three takeaways and held the Badgers to two scores in the 17-14 upset. Ward is in his first season as the Cougars’ coordinator.

SEC

Kentucky DC Brad White
The buzz:
During the final 35 minutes of Kentucky’s 26-16 win over then-No. 12 Florida, White’s defense held the Gators scoreless, scored on a pick-six, secured an additional takeaway and had two late fourth-down stops. Florida QB Anthony Richardson had just 147 total yards; he was 14-of-35 for 143 in the air and had just 4 rushing yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Group of 5 offensive coordinator

Georgia Southern’s Bryan Ellis
The buzz:
Ellis’ group led the way in Georgia Southern’s 45-42 win over Nebraska that proved to be Scott Frost’s final game as Huskers coach. Under Ellis’ direction, the Eagles posted the second-highest yardage output against a Nebraska defense since at least 2000 and the highest since 2012 (642 yards). Georgia Southern had 409 passing yards, 233 rushing yards and six touchdowns, including the game-winner with 36 seconds remaining. Ellis is in his first season as the Eagles’ coordinator.

Group of 5 defensive coordinator

Appalachian State’s Dale Jones
The buzz:
A week after it lost a game during which it scored 61 points, Appalachian State came away with a significant upset of No. 6 Texas A&M without even reaching 20 points. It was largely because of Jones’ defense. In the 17-14 win, the Mountaineers limited A&M to 186 yards, nine first downs and one offensive score. The Aggies’ other score came on a kick return. App State had a time-of-possession edge of 41:29 to 18:17.
