J.D. PicKell's College Football Playoff Rankings After Week 2

Two weeks of the season have come and gone, giving us a good idea who the top college football players are shaping up to be in 2024. Today we take a look at the top quarterbacks.

On3’s experts have put their heads together and weighed the performances thus far, as well as the overall ability of each signal-caller, to determine the rankings.

Let’s dive in, starting from the top with the best college quarterback in the game right now.

1. Carson Beck, Georgia

Beck has been remarkably consistent through the first two games, hitting all the throws he needs to make and even rushing when needed to pick up the occasional first down. Georgia has been excellent because of it.

In fact, you’d hardly know that the Bulldogs retooled their entire skill position group this offseason. Beck has gotten the new guys involved early and often, distributing the football as well as anyone in the country right now.

2. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss

Dart continues to pile up huge yardage totals, even if his number of touchdown strikes dipped considerably in Week 2. Through the first two weeks, Dart has thrown for 795 yards, averaging nearly 400 yards per contest.

The Ole Miss signal-caller is also capable of hurting defenses with his feet, as evidenced by his two touchdown runs so far. Dart is going to put up big numbers this year, it’s just a matter of what he does in the biggest games that will be important for the Rebels.

3. Quinn Ewers, Texas

Speaking of players that are getting it done in big games already, you really can’t look past Ewers. His performance in a demolition of a ranked Michigan team on the road was tremendous and firmly established Texas as a top college football team this year.

Through two games, Ewers has thrown three touchdown passes in each contest. He has been picked off only once. And while Ewers has yet to really unlock defenses with his legs this year, he’s certainly capable when given the opportunity.

4. Cam Ward, Miami

Another player with a marquee win on his resume already, Ward made a name for himself when he went out and thrashed Florida in the Swamp. That was as impressive an early season performance as just about any this year.

Ward can occasionally get a little loose with the football, but that’s partially a product of his confidence and ability. He knows he can unlock just about any aspect of a defense with his skills, and he’s not afraid to try it. That makes him one of the most fun players to watch on this list.

5. Jalen Milroe, Alabama

For the second straight year, Alabama struggled to put away USF in the early going. But this time there are no questions about Milroe’s job security, whereas a year ago he lost the starting job temporarily and was the talk of college football.

Milroe has been very good this year, utilizing his legs to do a lot of the damage. He has rushed for 81 yards and four scores already, while throwing for 394 yards and five more. He has not thrown an interception.

6. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado

It’s hard to get a real read on where Sanders should stack up, because his ability is obvious. He can play. But he’s also playing on a team that is ill-equipped to handle the tougher teams on the schedule, particularly when it comes to the trenches. That often leaves Sanders behind the 8-ball.

Sanders was back to his old ways on Saturday against Nebraska, trying to make things happen while taking a beating. He took five sacks in the contest. Until those numbers go down, it’s going to be hard to see what Sanders is truly capable of.

7. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon

It’s been an interesting start to the season for Gabriel, who has been involved in two nail-biter contests that most wouldn’t have expected. Still, he’s done everything asked of him to this point.

Gabriel has completed 84.3% of his passes through the first two contests. He’s thrown for four touchdowns without an interception. Yet Oregon hasn’t truly had a breakout offensive performance just yet, which you’d certainly think they’re capable of given Gabriel’s presence and the weapons he has available. We’ll see if things begin to click for the College Football Playoff hopeful in the coming weeks.

8. Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee

Iamaleava has been lights out through the first two games, though not entirely without faults. He threw two interceptions in a game against NC State, but Tennessee still won the neutral-site contest 51-10. That’s big time.

The second-year signal caller has been pretty smooth in his operation of the offense. Moreover, he offers the dual-threat dynamism many teams crave. He’s run for 71 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing for 525 yards and five scores.

9. Will Howard, Ohio State

Ohio State doesn’t need Howard to do too much and so far he’s been able to operate within those parameters. There are so many potential playmakers to lean on that all Howard has to do is get them the ball safely. He’s done just that.

In two contests, Howard has thrown for 520 yards and four touchdowns. He’s done so without throwing an interception, which is huge. He’s also run for 24 yards and a score, showing a well-balanced effort and making him one of the more reliable quarterbacks in college football.

10. Noah Fifita, Arizona

The Arizona quarterback was a huge part of the program’s resurgence last year under head coach Jedd Fisch, and he’s continued it this fall under new leadership. Fifita has helped the Wildcats to a 2-0 start, though this week’s contest against Northern Arizona was a little close.

Fifita has thrown an interception in both of his games so far this season, so he’ll need to work on protecting the ball a bit better. But he’s also thrown for 595 yards and five scores in that span, a solid overall contribution.

There you have it, your top 10 quarterbacks through Week 2 of the college football season. It’s a virtual who’s who, with many of the top signal-callers on potential playoff teams if they can continue to deliver the goods on a weekly basis. It’s a fun group to watch.
