J.D. PicKell's College Football Playoff Rankings After Week 3

The first three weeks of the college football season are in the books, and there’s a new face atop the On3 Impact Top 10 players after Week 3. Colorado two-way standout Travis Hunter now takes the No. 1 spot.

Hunter is coming off a huge night on both sides of the ball in the rivalry victory over Colorado State last week. That helped him move up to No. 1 in the On3 Impact Top 10 in place of Ashton Jeanty, who dropped to No. 2.

Cam Ward was another big mover in the updated rankings. He’s now No. 3 after a third straight impressive game at Miami, leading the Hurricanes to a 62-0 victory over Ball State.

Ward remained efficient, completing 19 of 28 passes for 346 yards and five touchdowns in the effort. He’s settling into the offense well in Coral Gables, and he’ll play his final non-conference game this week against Florida A&M.

The On3 Impact Top 10 is sure to see some shifting as conference play starts to get underway. Here’s where the rankings stand after Week 3.

1. Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

One of the top playmakers in the country, Travis Hunter continued to shine on both sides of the ball against Colorado State. He had 100 receiving yards on offense as Shedeur Sanders’ top target to go with five tackles and an interception on defense in the 28-9 victory.

That performance helped move Hunter up from No. 3 in last week’s On3 Impact Top 10 as Colorado gets ready to get Big 12 play underway. He picked up where he left off last season as the straw that stirs the drink for the Buffs, and he’ll look to keep it going this week against Baylor.

2. Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State

Boise State was idle in Week 3 after a loss to Oregon in Week 2. When the Broncos return, Ashton Jeanty will look to continue his dominant start to the season.

Jeanty’s 229.5 yards per game ranks first in the nation entering Week 4, and he doesn’t show many signs of slowing down. Boise State will come out of the bye with a matchup against Portland State to set the table for a high-profile matchup against Washington State.

3. Cam Ward, QB, Miami

Through three games, Cam Ward continues to impress. His transition to Miami has been seamless, and his performance against Ball State was the latest indicator.

Ward leads FBS with 11 passing touchdowns, and his 345 passing yards per game rank third in the country. He’ll get one more tune-up this week before ACC play starts as the Heisman Trophy buzz continues to grow.

4. Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas

After a resounding victory over Michigan, Kelvin Banks Jr. and the Texas offensive line stood strong once again against UTSA. The Longhorns cruised to the 56-7 victory – a game which also saw Arch Manning take over for Quinn Ewers.

Texas returned its entire offensive line from last year’s College Football Playoff appearance, and it’s shown through two games. Banks is an important part of the operation, which is why he earned preseason All-SEC honors after an All-American season in 2023.

5. Malaki Starks, S, Georgia

An anchor of Georgia’s defense, Malaki Starks turned in another big day in last week’s victory at Kentucky. He tied for the team lead with eight tackles in the effort to continue his hot start to the season.

Starks drew some high praise after the season opener when Kirby Smart likened him to Champ Bailey. He’s clearly a key part of the defense as the Bulldogs take their record regular-season winning streak into the bye week with Alabama looming.

6. Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss

The Ole Miss defense has been firing on all cylinders to start the 2024 season. The Rebels enter Week 4 averaging 692 yards of offense, and Jaxson Dart continues to lead the way.

Dart put on another show last week against Wake Forest as Ole Miss came away with the 40-6 victory. He went 26-of-34 for 377 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a rushing score as the Rebels get ready for wrap up non-conference play against Georgia Southern.

7. Will Johnson, CB, Michigan

As Michigan deals with a quarterback change on offense, the defense is still strong. Will Johnson is a big reason why as he continues to dominate the cornerback position.

Johnson had four tackles – including a tackle for loss – and a pass defended against Arkansas State last week. He’s a leader of the Wolverines defense, although he dropped a few spots in the On3 Impact Top 10 after Week 3.

8. Carson Beck, QB, Georgia

Although Georgia struggled to find the end zone against Kentucky, Carson Beck still looked poised. He threw for 160 yards on 16-of-24 passing, and he’s still expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country this year.

Beck is still the centerpiece of the UGA defense and came in at No. 10 in the On3 Heisman Trophy Poll after Week 3. The bye will give him a chance to reset before a high-profile matchup against Alabama to get SEC play underway.

9. Quinn Ewers, QB, Texas

Through the first half against UTSA, Quinn Ewers picked up where he left off against Michigan. He was 14 of 16 for 185 yards and two touchdowns – but an injury cut his day short.

Ewers is dealing with an oblique injury, and Steve Sarkisian called him “day-to-day” while meeting with reporters this week. Texas is gearing up to take on Louisiana-Monroe to wrap up non-conference play, and Arch Manning is trending toward starting the game while Ewers works his way back.

10. Wyatt Milum, OL, West Virginia

A newcomer in the On3 Impact Top 10, Wyatt Milum is the anchor of West Virginia’s offensive line. The Mountaineers came up short in the Backyard Brawl against Pitt, but Milum stood out protecting Garrett Greene.

Milum continued his hot start to the season, which included a high grade from Pro Football Focus in Week 2. He could find himself in the first-round conversation for the NFL Draft as WVU starts Big 12 play against Kansas this week.

As conference play gets underway across the country, more big performances are sure follow. That means there will be more opportunities for players to separate themselves as the best in the nation.
