College Football Rankings: ESPN releases updated FPI Top 25 after Week 7
The latest college football rankings from ESPN are here after the network updated its FPI Top 25 following Week 7 of the season.
If you watched college football this weekend, chances are you saw an upset or two. Or you saw some classic games that we’ll be talking about for awhile!
Let’s dive into ESPN’s new FPI rankings following Week 6 of action.
1. Texas
It was a shaky start, but the Texas Longhorns ran away from rival Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout, 34-3. They also remained undefeated.
Quinn Ewers returned and shook off an early interception and threw for a touchdown, 199 yards and 20-of-29 passing. Tre Wisner ran 13 times for 118 yards and a touchdown as Texas remained at the top of ESPN’s FPI rankings.
2. Ohio State
The Buckeyes didn’t budge in the FPI despite their first loss of the season to Oregon (more on them later). A 33-32 loss turned out to be one of the best games of the weekend.
Will Howard might’ve forgotten about the clock, but he gave Ohio State a chance. Ultimately, this game could be a blip on the radar. A Big Ten title game rematch is certainly in the cards.
3. Alabama
Welcome back to the winner’s circle Alabama. The Crimson Tide didn’t move in the FPI this week despite nearly being upset for the second week in a row.
In the 27-25 win, Alabama outscored the Gamecocks 13-6 in the final frame and denied a two-point conversion late to win. Cause for concern? We’ll find out at Tennessee next week.
4. Georgia
The Bulldogs won a shootout over Mississippi State and apparently Kirby Smart shoved a player? It was a whacky game but Georgia got another win.
Right now, they’re still at No. 4 in the FPI rankings but there’s room to grow. The impending matchup against new SEC foe Texas will be must-see-TV.
5. Ole Miss
Despite slipping up on the road and suffering their second loss of the season, the Rebels did not move in this week’s FPI rankings. There’s no shame in losing to LSU in overtime on the road, but it hurts Ole Miss’ playoff chances.
At this point, Lane Kiffin and crew have to rally and win out. ESPN is still higher on them than most, but it’s going to be tough sledding in the second half of the season.
6. Notre Dame (+1)
Notre Dame took it to Stanford Saturday and moved up a spot in the ESPN FPI rankings this weekend. The Fighting Irish have to yet to lose since being upset by NIU earlier this year.
Is this a playoff team? If they keep winning it certainly seems like one. Just remember, Notre Dame can’t finish higher than No. 5 in the seedings due to not being affiliated with a conference.

7. Tennessee (-1)
The Volunteers won but lost a small battle with the ESPN FPI rankings this week. Beating Florida in overtime sounds nice on paper since the Gators are a rival.
However, Florida fell to 3-3 and were thinking upset. Tennessee just looks a little flat right now but hey, the Vols won another football game to improve to 5-1 on the season and keep the SEC hopes alive.
8. Oregon
A huge win for Oregon didn’t result in any movement in the ESPN FPI this weekend. However, it put Oregon at the top of the Big Ten elite teams.
Hosting Ohio State in a classic was quite the night cap for Saturday. But they’ll surely meet in the conference title game won’t they? Stay tuned!
9. Penn State
Penn State came back and took down USC after a close call out in Los Angeles. Whatever James Franklin thinks of State College’s runway didn’t matter in this one.
The Nittany Lions escaped with a win on the road over a Big Ten opponent. And with that, they are still undefeated. Things are heating up in the conference.
10. Miami
The Hurricanes had a weekend off after last week’s thriller at Cal. It was much needed as Miami remained undefeated at 6-0.
But they didn’t move in this week’s FPI rankings. Miami hits the road to take on Louisville next weekend and then hosts Florida State after the Cardinals.

LSU only moved up one spot despite its win over Ole Miss in overtime. The FPI only projects 8.3 wins on the current schedule. Still, there’s plenty of time for movement.
