Colorado and Colorado State played a classic game that came down to the wire last season, before the Buffaloes eventually escaped in double overtime. ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis and ESPN insider Pete Thamel expect the Rams to get some revenge this weekend.

Both Davis and Thamel have Colorado State winning the game outright on Saturday. They spoke on the ESPN College GameDay podcast about why they are rolling with the Rams.

“That game last season was bonkers. Straight up bonkers. Do we recall the 27 total penalties. … There were ejections. Tory Horton threw a touchdown pass,” Thamel recalled. “I’m going to take Colorado State to win outright, in part because without Shilo Sanders, God bless Travis Hunter, he’s the best player in the country, I don’t trust their pass defense. And they can’t run the ball.

“So I just think there are too many factors here, and I think Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi’s going to come swaggering into this game. Tory Horton, he’s been dinged up. They’re hopeful he plays, and that’s something I’m sure we’ll be updating on GameDay Saturday morning. But I think the Rams meet the moment with Colorado reeling.”

Rece Davis also likes Colorado State to win, but he is picking the Rams because of the state of the Colorado program, instead of because of anything involving Xs and Os or player personnel.

After last week’s loss to Nebraska, the Buffaloes have dropped seven straight games against FBS teams dating back to last year. Davis believes the slide will continue against Colorado State.

“I’m wondering where Colorado is at emotionally and mentally right now. … I believe Deion Sanders to be a good coach in terms of his core beliefs – fundamentals, toughness, the way you play,” Davis explained. “But it feels like right now they are on the cusp of an existential crisis. Because once Shedeur and Travis are gone, we assume to the NFL next year, what happens next?

“Well, you say, ‘OK, so what, Rece? That’s way down the road.’ There are the other players on that roster right now that after what happened in Nebraska Saturday night, are probably wondering ‘What happens to me right now?’ And the challenge is to hold them all together.”
